blew a header gasket on first dyno pull today but still pulled

235 rwhp

337 torque.

i didn't do another run due to the gasket. :( i think it would of pulled 260-270 maybe alittle higher. i was hoping in the 290 range and 380+ torque. will find out in a few weeks when i do the crank pulley and MAT relocation sensor gonna re-dyno her. A/F was 12.9 which is real good for a stock regulator. i got an adjustable one but when i checked the fuel pressure not about a 2 months ago over Rich's house it was at 45 psi so i decided to leave this alone for now until i pull the plenum for something that needs to be done..

i was hot when i dynoed also because when i got their we hooked it up and did the first run. we had another car (LS1) getting tuned and they called me to tell me to come and dyno the car. i wanted atleast a half hour to cool her down :(

your guys thoughts?

well it wasn't a header gasket. just blew the EGR midshift setup i put in till i can rip it out right. used a piece of the exhaust rubber hose running from the top of the air tubes back to the air pump. hose clamped it down on the EGR valve on the header to the cut piece i fixed up to bolt the EGR system back together.

shewwww i was happy to see that. still gotta button up a few things. i want to change my fuel filter tomorrow, put a fresh set of cut back plugs in her, finish up the EGR crap, add the new water temp sensor that goes to the head, and grease the chassis.

tonight i hooked up my tranny cooler and put the other 2 3" band clamps on the header collector.

slowly but surely i'm getting her buttoned up for the track friday

some ice on the intake between runs, 18 psi in the Goodyear F1's, 111 octane, 1500 stall then launch and collect my 12 second time slip

DA for friday should be -1350 to -1640 range 7pm -10pm

those are amazing dyno numbers for the mod's you have listed. Using a 20% correction factor you are making 293.75 hp at the flywheel.

thanks TnT! i think there is alittle left in the tuning. i rushed to get it done and couldn't get a full pull. i am interested to see how she pulls finished up and with alittle tuning. i am sure since i started modding my stock 87 vette she leaned up alot by looking at the AF ratio. when i first got the car if you nailed in to her all you smelled was fuel. exhaust mods and freed up alittle under the hood with alot of tuning and free/cheap mods.

Mic,

I love that torque number. I'm a torque fan so I look at the torque before I look at HP. Just wait until you put that LT1 intake on there. But then, you'll definitely have to do the heads and came to take advantage of that high flow intake. :)

Did you buy the car used? Maybe the previous owner did some work on it. Reason I say is that I dont see the mod's in your sig. adding almost 60hp.

Neither does anyone else... but they do. I've seen the engine before-hand, and it was totally virgin - low miles, very clean, doesn't look like it was ever opened. Given that GM lists a +/- 10% margin of error for HP on their cars, a stock 87 could have as low as 221 or as high as 269 and still be within tolerance.

Yep, kind of reminds me of the LT4's that were putting out LS1 type power numbers.

Remember that Ford Cobra fiasco a few years ago when they were falling well short of advertised HP? :(

Wow, that is very impressive, Mic. Do you have any idea why you are getting such high numbers? Or is it just simply a lucky ringer from the factory?

My dad also had an '87 dark metallic red coupe. I was 6 at the time, so that model will always hold a special place in my heart. Beautiful car. Gotta love the atari dash as well. :upthumbs

the car was bone stock w/ 32k in miles. average time last sept was 14.60 did my mods and did alot of tuning finding out what works and what doesn't compared to other people. i think i might have 500 bucks in mods in this car at the moment.

i took it to Tony's corvette shop (ranked in the top 10 best corvette shops in the nation) fora C4 seminar for new and people that are thinking of buying C4's when i first got it. the inspection was still good on the car. the only thing they found that was not stock was 2 bolts that was put on the plastic air box that sits on top of the radiator.

the only mod i found was an air foil. my paper work from the car shows the previous owner being a woman. dealer told me she traded it in on a vert C5. when i first got it she ran like crap with stock plugs, stock wires, stock cap, rotor and most likely air filter. after 3000 miles of rebreaking her in and making sure i didn't have any leaks i did a full tune up and nothing else. went a best of 14.24. did the maf screens, tb bypass, and cut lid / K&N filter. never bested the 14.24. did a full tune up and regapped plugs to .047 and bumped timing to 12 degrees advanced, added 160 t-stat and added an Accel Super Coil then went a 13.78 with no mufflers. gutted the cat and added a front Y pipe with no precats went the 13.26 with a 1.81 60' with a best MPH of 104.65 so far. can't really judge the times by mods because the weather was getting cooler as i started the mods in september but that is basically where i am now.

nice i love the colors!

the only thing i can say is alot of tuning and i am running for times only. i ice down the intake and try to get the water temp down to 130 when i stage the car. this has gotten me my best times with 18.5 psi in the rear Goodyear F1 285 series tires. (best street tire i ever had!) when i'm at normal operating temp (which is 160 for me because of 160 t-stat) i run 13.40 all day long.
