I am looking on bumping up horse numbers of my 88. I have the exhaust done and was thinking of a Hypertech chip.

What would be the 1 (or 2) things you could recommend that would be fairly inexpensive (less than 500) things you would do?

I have done many of the smaller things myself on previous cars.

Thanks all

What have you done so far? Only the exhaust? If you haven't already:

1. K&N air filter-about $50
2. Cut that filter lid open so it's only the frame-free
3. Air foil-about $32 on eBay
4. Remove the screens off the MAF-another free mod

As for the PROM, there are others besides Hypertech and it seems like all Hypertech chips will do for you is turn the fans on earlier. I'm waiting for a chip to come in and should have it in by the weekend, it's not a Hypertech though.

5. Roller rockers-don't know the cost, maybe somewhere in the $225 range???

Sorry forgot some details.
Yes the K+N was installed. You say to cut the frame open...
also remove the screens on the MAP....

any side effects on those free mods.

What is the air foil?

Cutting the frame open will do no harm. They sell filter lids that are already opened up for about $60 while you could do it yourself.

As for cutting off the MAF screens, some people will say you'll harm the vehicle while others say no you will not do any harm. I guess if you drive without an air filter, then something could get into the TB.

An air foil is a small metallic piece that fits into the opening of your TB smoothing the air flow. Notice that the TB isn't very smooth inside and that air will crash instead of flow into the valves. Everyone has a different opinion on whether the air foil will do you any good. I honestly noticed a louder exhaust tone so I'm assuming that it has improved the air flow. And for $32, you can't really go wrong.

There is a post somewhere here, where testing showed no difference with a K&N versus a clean stock filter. We all have them, though, don't we?

Do you have headers or just a cat-back? Good, thermal coated headers will make a marked improvement, and should be in that price range. I'll never go without ceramic coated headers again; just too much heat lost into the engine compartment.

BTW, my old, modified L83 passed emissiions on two occasions, after failing, after i reset the computer. Seemed it learned some bad stuff, trying to adjust to the modifications.

:w

The car failed emissions when it was tested. Pretty high numbers on all gasses(spelling) . I suspected the cat was drilled and sure enough it was empty. The exhaust place had a true dual system from a 92 vette. The only addition was a high flow cat for either side.
The high flow cats are located about where the pre cats would have been. End result was numbers dropped low enough to pass.
The NOX is still on the higher side but they will be another day.
