ECM access

Is it necessary to remove the entire interior to get to the ECM on an '85? Seriously, it appears the easiest way is to go through the pad, but I can't figure out how to remove that. Can someone help? Thanks

remove the black cardboard piece under the passenger side that has the light in it. You will find the ECM up in there. You cannot remove it from the top, it has to come out the bottom. There are 2 screws holding it into a plastic frame.

Thanks, I got that far, but was afraid to disturb the large bundle of wires I encountered there. But if that's the only way to go...

That's the way they do it from the factory

AND it's "the easiest way"... which is a bit of a joke.

I just noticed your "handle". Are you leaving? :L
DI-DI (Viet.): leave, go, move out.

DI-DI MAU (Viet.): emphatic of Di-di.

At least it's not dien cai dao. :L

i replaced the ecm on my 85

i think its a pain to do , its not well on the back,, hehe,,

why do u need to take out the ecm??

maybe its not bad like you think,, or are you upgrading it?

i can help there were alot of thigns that i thought my ecm were bad when it wasn't,, and i replaced it for no reason at all

Ken: I think the literal translation is : go, go, fast, however, it's on a purple heart plate so, go figure.

Yes, Shadowing, I am upgrading from the stock PROM mainly to install a 160 thermostat. Mine runs over 200 way too often for my comfort. And, a little extra jolt at the wide open throtle will be fun, me thinks.

So it was SO EAASY

Disconnect battery FIRST

REMOVE KEY

( Pass side )

In the 88 there are 3
(1/4" on 8mm me thinks) screws holding the plastic hush LOWER panel in.

Remove those

The panel drops down a bit.

Remove the white & Orange wire to the interior floor lamp

Remove plastic panel

Reach up under the dash and CAREFULLY remove the wiring.... just flex it out of the way
with some additional vac control lines.

Now you will see the 2 connectors for the ECM

There are 2 10mm self tapping screws on the FAR side of the plastic bit holding the ECM up... remove the screws ant the ECM falls out.

Remove hatch on ECM

Eject chip

put new one in

Reverse order

20-25 minutes.

Thanks Vigman...very concise.

Hey Ken, I seem to have misplaced my Viet-English dictionary.

What do "Dien Cai Dao" mean, please?

Could it be like "You bucco dien cai dau you." :beer

Da. Pha?i. (yes)

Dien cai dao ("dee-in-kee-daow"): = Vietnamese for "crazy in the head". ;)
