I did a welding job for a guy and took some parts as payment. I have aquired a new Performer RPM model#7101. It was prettier than cash to the eye. It appears to be a bit taller than stock. With out tearing my car apart to check does anyone know if I have hood clearance on the 80. Do any of you use this manifold?Maybe its not at all suitable for my car, I have no idea. I need advice. Did I mention it looks real pretty? Thanks,Ron.

may not be qualified to answer this....

im in a 73 w/ 350ci......i have a edelbrock performer manifold and carb....they are nice and fit under my hood.....but its mine and i have no idea of your clearances.....just letting you know its a nice addition....just stash the original in the garage somewhere.....my seller gave them to the guy that installed the new stuff.....im sure he was happy with that deal....chas:bu

Ron - I have the 2101 on my car with the stock carb and air cleaner. Hood clearance is about 1/4 - 1/2 ". I had to go to a thinner carb insulator/gasket than original just to get this clearance. I am almost positive you'll not have enough clearance unless you go with some sort of very thin after market air cleaner.
If I am not mistaken that 7101 is taller than the 2101 by quite a bit.

Intake

I tried to put that on my 81, so i called edelbrock, they said it would not fit, with the stock hood, then again, the word can't never stop me. Good luck

hi ron,
ive got an earlier vette with the torker II manifold, i wanted to put an rpm or airgap on,but they are both about 3-4" taller than the torker. if you dont have an electric choke you could put a drop base air cleaner (it will give you about an extra 1 1/4")

Your RPM will NOT clear the hood on an 80, been there done that! Seems I spent one Sat morning just replacing my gaskets:(

Thanks guys, I was afraid of that. Maybe I should think about cutting a hole in the hood. Thats intimidating looking. What do ya think?

Might be a great excuse to get that L88 hood. Now that would be intimidating!

OK here is my idea! A PERFORMER RPM with A SPEED DEMON mechanical secondary no choke (650 or 750 ?). A drop base air cleaner K & N filter and K & N filter top. I would like to here more on this combo from everybody THANK YOU

Speaking of manifold clearance...

Has anyone measured the front and rear heights of the stock intake manifold? (see this for a diagram)

That might make comparing another manifold to the stock manifold easier.

I researched this same issue and found , the word is, the RPM manifolds dont allow enough hood clearance in the small block C3.
In fact Edelbrock says that in their documentation at their web site.
I believed them and got a performer EPS manifold rather than change my hood.

I have an RPM intake, carter 650 supersieries carb with K&N air filter and I have hood clearance. So maybe my carb is smaller then others, Idon't know but it works for me.

I am running a Performer RPM with a Qjet and a drop base from a 69 Chevelle (396). With a 3"tall K&N filter. I do have the big block hood, (not L88 hood). 3/4" clearance. It works very well. Fred.

i looked through my edelbrock catalog, it gives 2 height measurements for each of their manifolds, front and back.
i added the 2 heights and divided by 2 to get an average
the bb performer is 4.85" tall(carb pad), the rpm air gap is 5.22"
and the torker II is 3.85"
i have the bb hood and small(2") air cleaner. i have a 750 holley and am tight on clearance. does anyone know the height differences between holley, carter, ....ect?
thanks
mike

Hi,

An RPM Airgap intake and matching Edelbrock carb will fit under the hood. I had it under mine, the only problem was that it required a very thin filter element on a dropbase filter housing. On my car this caused some breathing problems at higher rpm, on the rolling road it was down about 20hp compaired to no filter so there was only one solution and I cut a hole in the hood working on the idea that cool fresh air = HP, it worked for me but not to many people want to chop their hoods.

J.

I just went thru all that measuring and checking hood clearance on my 75 and finally gave up and went with what I knew would work. People squeeze the RPM manifolds in with a low air cleaner but rather then take a chance I went with a 2101 clone that was polished. I also just took off my old 750 Holley and went with a 600 Performer carb. Maybe I'm going in the wrong direction from some of you but I just want a sweet running engine and not top HP.

hey resto 75, is there a height difference between the holley and the performer carb? if i stay with the holley, another contributor told me he got a drop base air cleaner from corvette world which drops more than the k&n, i really like the looks and the performance #'s ive seen on the rpm

I installeda performer rpm in my '78 nad it didn't leave any room at all. i had to go and purchasea cowl induction hood for it, from eckler's. I am very happy with it though.

I have a 82 with stock hood and the same Edelbrock RPM intake installed with a 4 barrel Holley carburetor.
I bought the car with this configuration already installed on the car and there is not enough clearance for an air cleaner to work properly.
The previous owner had one of those heart shaped Edelbrock air cleaners on it and the thing was pressed so tight to the carb. that the choke butterfly was stuck open by the foam in the air cleaner starving the engine for air, and is one of the reasons the guy cuold not get the car to run rite and why I got a really good deal on the car.
To fix the problem I am going to use a High Rise Hood from Ecklers and have purchased a K&M X-Treme Filter and Filter Lid
The intake and carb do look very good on the car and work very well when I run it without the stock hood .
I am going to Ecklers tommorow to look at some hoods in person and will let you no what one I have chosen to use and how well it works. I will also send you some picture when I get it installed.
