Where is the EGR located at? Is it at the back of the intake manifold underneath the plenum?

I looked in my manual but it only makes reference to the solenoid.

Can a faulty EGR cause the car to run rich?

Both the EGR valve and the solenoid are under the plenum ... should be just infront of the fuel pressure regulator. Are you getting a code 32? I guess it could make a car run rich.

Can I replace the EGR with just taking the plenum off or do I have to take the runners off as well? What about the gaskets? Are they okay to be used again or should I go with new gaskets?

If you loosen all the runner bolts on the passenger side then remove the plenum bolts the plenum will slide right out. Maybe a whack with a rubber mallet before removing the plenum bolts (be careful its not that thick and Aluminum). Of course you need to remove all the plumbing and disconnect the electrical connectors, don't forget the one on the underside of the plenum, and the vaccuum feeds at the end of the plenum that go to the brake booster. My gaskets were OK and just reused them, although I had a new set, they use a little plastic pin to hold them to the plenum during reassembly.

Never took the plenum off, is there detailed instructions some where to do this?? Thanks in advance.

Take the TB bolts off. Remove the linkage. Remove the vacuum line for the brake booster. Then take off the runner bolts to the plenum. Am I missing anything guys...??

Don't forget about the electrical connections underneath the plenum. Gotta disconnect those before the plenum is pulled up. Also, there are vacuum lines on the passenger side rear of the plenum.

I can't believe someone found this thread!:L

Wow I didn't even notice it was a year old. I had thought this question popped up earlier, but wasn't sure.

Thanks for the help men...........sounds too simple, what's the downside?? BTW, if you do due diligence, you find things like this......

Downside...The torx bolts on the runners are hard to loosen, and retighten. The vacuum line for the brake booster is somewhat difficult to get off, but it is doable. Shouldn't take but a few hours to take it apart.

Yes gaskets are involved, and I think there are little alignment spacers. I am not sure if there is a tightening pattern for the torx bolts.

It shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to have that completely taken off. There are gaskets from the runners to the plenum. However, there are little plastic thingy's on the gaskets that will keep them in place so they won't shift while you re-install them.

When I did mine on the 91, I had trouble re-installing the plenum with the new gskts. I didn't loosen the runner bolts. The plenum came off okay but the re-install with the new gskts wouldn't let the plenum line up with the bolt holes in the runners. I put the plenum in the freezer for about an hour to shrink it a little and then it just about dropped right in. Still had to use an alignment tool (phillips screwdriver) thru the runner bolt holes and into the threaded plenum holes to align and worked from the center to the front and rear runners. Took about and hour or so to re-install. Put never seize on the plenum bolts before starting them also. Hardest part of the job was getting the one bolt to loosen on the EGR valve itself. Crowfoot wrench wouldn't fit so used boxed end and a pry bar to break it loose. Hard to describe but once you are there you will see what I mean. After that it was smooth sailing. Guess you could loosen the runner bolts but they are a little difficult to get to. Good luck.

The nuts holding the EGR are 3/8 while the rest of the bolts and stuff are metric. That was confusing. One of the EGR nuts can be accessed by the crows foot socket while the other can be accessed by an open end wrench going through the runner area with a conduit pipe as an extension.
