I own a '73 Corvette. One thing I noticed on the emblems on the gas tank door and steering wheel is that the checkered flags are the same... but on the front emblem the pattern is opposite. On the steering wheel and fuel door the pattern starts with black in the upper left hand corner. However on the front emblem it starts with white. I did some looking online at other '73 Corvettes... this seems to be the pattern. Anyone know why this is? Is this the same in other years within the Stingray generation? Am I making something of nothing?

Don't know the answer, but to complicate matters my original horn button starts with black but the newer GM replacement (from box #3957952) starts with white.

Both of my nose emblems (one original) start with white.

I kinda did some searching... I've noticed that some replacement parts are made differently. One site gives me one and another gives me another.

I own a 74 which came with no gas door emblem, so I installed one from 77. Well your question got me curious, in R. prince's book the corner is white, on my car it's black. Which is correct? Only NCRS. PG.

True. Depends on who makes the reproduction part.

My advice would be to get a copy of M. F.. Dobbins' book, Fact Book of the 1973-77 Stingray. Great stuff in there, including a factory stock '73 on the cover.

ZIP has the book and you can find them on eBay. Pricey, but good reading. Photographs are terrific. Dr. Dobbins knows his stuff.

:)

Congratulations---you have just discovered the difference between Asian made reproduction parts and true NOS parts. Asian reproductions parts use a different color scheme to get around the GM "trademark" issue. I'm not sure about the '73 emblems (starting with black or white) you'll have to research this some more and determine which one is "NOS" design.

On our 72 all emblems start with black in the corner, including the horn button. On our 79 it's the same all black on left.

This is typical of original '73 emblems, mine are the same. No idea why it was done this way.

Wow... I love this site already. Good points and ideas. You guys are great!!

At least for the 77 the emblems manufactured by GM or by one of its authorized suppliers are wrong in the checkered flag coloring pattern. Here are links of what is offered for the fuel tank and hood emblems for a 77 and my NOS emblems. The pictures of the emblems on the first link are at the bottom of page.
Great Post! Just to make people aware of what’s being sold now days as NOS parts.

Wow, that's some incredible attention to detail. Your post prompted me to go out and check mine. They're all identical. Thanks.

Yeah... on my '73 the front emblem is a disk with the flags in them... in a starburst design. I couldn't imagine why Chevrolet would have made the error on the checker flag on it.

Every one I've seen are the same. I don't think GM made any mistakes (unless it was in the original specs).

You guys are awesome! Thanks!
