Hi Dwayne.
I need an engine for my 61 vette. The original engine was a 283. I would like to find a 283 that would be considered as close to original as possible. I would however like to get more horse power from this engine. Maybe a fuel injected system would be acceptable. Please let me know what you think I should do.

If he wants it "numbers-correct", he'll want a 3756519 283 block. If he wants it "appearance-correct" but with more stink, he'll want a 327 block; dresses out with exactly the same external parts as the 283 block, will look correct except for the casting number. A later 350 or 383 will also bolt in, but won't have the crankcase vent hole in the back of the block.

Rebuilt correct fuel injection units with a distributor are going these days for $5,000-$6,000 or more; that's more than it costs to build an engine from scratch.
