Engine ID Help...

[87 Greenwood Coupe]

I am trying to get information about my engine.

On the rear of the engine on the driver's side, the following number is stamped: 4010207

It also has the letters GM near on the left and CFD near the right of the above numbers.

Can anyone help me with identification?

What car is it in? Your 87 should have a TPI (L98) in it the L82 was an earlier Carb engine.

The engine is in a C3, leading me to believe it is an L82 350, but I thought the casting numbers would tell for sure.

The 207 block was used in all '80 350 Corvettes (interchangeably with the 0010), and in all '81-'82 Corvettes. What's stamped on the front pad?

The Corvette Black Book states the following:

For 1980: block 14010207 = 350ci 190hp or 230hp late production
1981: block 14010207 = all
1982: block 14010207 = all
1984: block 14010207 = all
1985: block 14010207 = all

To determine whether it's an L82 or L48, etc., you need the 3 character suffix code.

There isn't a "1" before the 4010207, which is so confusing. This number appears on the driver side rear of the engine. Before the number, but not in line is "GM" and after the number, but not in line is "CFM."

I am not able to fine the code number on the right front passenger side of the engine.

My engine has no stamp on the front either, it is a Jasper Engine that the previous owner put in it. Could be why you don't have one either. As I understand it, after the engine is built, the number gets stamped on the front indicating the date and model it is designated for.

When an engine is rebuilt a small amount is taken off the face of the Block to "square it up" this usually removes the factory stampings. I'm not sure if "crate" motors are stamped like the ones destined for installation in a car; but that is another possibility.

thats a Casting number put there when the block is poured at the foundry, it IDs the block as a 350

Right, Jasper rebuilds engines. They also make NASCAR engines. They use the manufacturers block, so it will have the casting numbers on the back. Other than that, I guess the guy buying the engine orders what he wants, but in my case it wasn't me!
