Okay i have been trying to figure out what kind of noise my vette has. When i put it into gear sometimes i hear a thud. Also at a rolling start and a little throttle there is a thud. It is an auto tranny and when i manually downshift i hear the same thud. Thought it was u joints, however i replaced all those without fixing the problem. The other day i got under the car and checked the u joints one more time, and they look okay. Then after further thought i started looking into the tranny mount. I assume there is a transmission mount on the rear of the tranny. If it was bad or the rubber had worn away it could be moving and making contact with something in the immediate area. I put the car up on jackstands and tryed to move the rear of the transmission without success. I looked around at the suspension components and all is well. So finally i took the car off stands, and left it on two pieces of 2x6 board. With the suspension unsettled i had my brother start the car and put it into gear, and watched the transmission closely. When the car went into gear, the tranny twisted more then i thought it should. It definetly is moving around. Not so much up and down but twisting. I then watched under the hood, while putting the car in and out of gear and the motor moves alot. I referenced the movement with my bro's 87 and there is alot more play.

Well should i check the motor mounts? The car is 18 yrs old and alot of torque is applied to those mounts. If i replace them how hard is it and does anybody have advice on how to do it.

Motor mounts are a definite item to put on your checklist. You also may want to check the torque arm, which is an integral part of the chassis structure, for excessive play at the bolt holes where it bolts to the transmission.
