Engine Noise when Cold

My recently purchased 2000 Convertible came with a 30 day bumper to bumper warranty. I had a ticking in the left front of the engine when cold that sounded like a valve or loose rocker arm. I took it into the dealer and they are going to replace all the pistons (they are paying for it). I am told that some engines had slightly undersized pistons which leads to the ticking when cold. There was supposedly a service bulletin or notice about this that extended the engine warranty to 100,000 miles.

Does anyone know anything about this? I can't find anything in the tech center.:confused

Hi rwpeders -

I know there was an issue with piston-slap (what you seem to be describing) in the GenIII truck engines (ls based block), but I do not remember any troubles with LS1/LS6 engines in this regard.

The aluminum block externalizes mechanical noises more prominently than an iron block engine. I noticed that my friends 01 coupe makes a prominent piston slap noise when it is started up cold. His prior car was a 2002 Z28 that had even worse slap at startup - it would go away as the engine warmed to operating temperature.

This is obviously considered to be a problem since in your case the dealer is essentially rebuilding the rotating assembly.

Neither my LS6 nor my LS1 have this issue, although I do hear some valvetrain noise in the LS6, and in both engines I can occasionally hear the fuel-injectors firing at low engine RPMs.

I am happy to hear that your dealer is working with you to make you happy.

Please keep us informed when you get your "new" engine back! ;)

best regards -

Go to the "forum" tab and select search. Then search "piston and slap". You will find lots of discussion about this topic. Pay attention to what c4c5 specialist says.

Thanks for the right search info. I was using piston and every other combination I could think of except that.

Glad to hear its a free fix...that would have cost thousands to repair...:beer
