I drove 700+ miles to Bowling Green without a problem. While there I gassed up and within 2 miles or less my idle became uneven. It would drop to 600 then speed up to 1100. I drove back with no real problem other than the idle. Now, after 3-4 fresh tanks of gas it is worse and has started shutting off when I come to a stop. It starts right back up but I have to keep the idle up. Any thoughts on this before I take it to a mechanic?

Is there any possibility at all that you may have gotten some bad fuel?

Maybe you can try changing out the fuel filter and see if that helps. You might have filled up too soon after the station took on a load of fuel and that generally stirs up the crap in the bottom of the station's tanks.

I will start with the fuel filter and see what happens. Thanks.

A friend of mine has a 92 Z28 Camaro with the TPI motor in it and his does the same thing from time to time. He pulls the intake tube off to expose the throttle body and gives it a shot of carb cleaner while the engine is running. That usually takes care of the problem for a while.

Can you check the fuel pressure at idle and above? When you restart, is it flooded or starved?

Fuel pressure to the regulator is almost constant. Vacuum is used to reduce the fuel pressure beyond the regulator, to the injectors. High vacuum > lower fuel pressure.

When I have had filter problems, it was first apparant during high fuel flow.

There is a post or two (search) about how to test the cat(s). :w

I decided to take it to my mechanic and let him figure it out. He said it was throwing 2 codes, 33 & 36. 33 is the mass air flow gizmo and 36 is the relays for the maf. He even took mine off and put some on from another vette that he had sitting there to be sure. I let him put new sensors on but held off on the maf. He said a new maf was $500. The sensors were $40 for the pair and that alone smoothed out the idle quite a bit. I then went to a parts store and spent $6.oo for a can of spray electrical cleaner and cleaned the maf real good. I have a theory about this. Before I went to Bowling Green I cleaned and re-oiled the k&n air filter. I'm thinking maybe some of the oil from the air filter got sucked into the maf so I am hoping that by cleaning it real good it will fix the problem. If not I will try to find a good used one. This weekend I'll drive it and find out for sure.
