My engine temperature gage quit working. I would like to replace the sensor in the block. Does any one know the original GM part number for this sensor. I am planning to try and cross reference the original number to find a sensor that will produce the same ohm signal so the reading is accurate. Any suggestions or ideas?

what is not working???
the gauge or the sensor in the head???

I'm not sure which unit is't working. With the engine running the needle stays all the way to the left. How do I test the switch and gage?

Check the resistance (ohm) in the sensor when cold and when hot. Should be different figures, sorry don't know which.

Pull the connector off the sensor in the left cylinder head and push-in one end of a resistor into the connector....use something between 10 and 100 ohms. Connect the other end of the resistor to frame. Turn ignition key to ON and see what the gauge shows. If still pegged to the left...then the gauge is either broken or the flex circuit trace going to the gauge is broken.

I think pegged to the left happens when the circuit is open. You could also try just shorting the sensor wire to frame and see what that does....it will either put needle to full right or left.
