Error message-shocks inoperative

Recently I've been getting occasional messages on my dash of my 01 coupe saying "shocks inoperative" drive below 80mph. I'v also been getting an occasional message that my active handling is inoperative. Then I'll go a few days and no error message. What's going on and should I do any sort of maintenance?

More like you're probably soon going to be doing an expensive repair.

Are any of the car's service lights on steady or coming on for short periods then going off?

no service lights are coming on or staying on at this time. By the way ther is only 45000 miles on the car.
