I put some duals on my vette, and some baffled mufflers out of mid america. They had square tips, red inside, and looked pretty good. Put them on, and the car was loud as hell. This I somewhat expected. However I never thought the car became slower. After posting here, many told me that because of the loss of backpressure, I probably lost some low end torque. However in this process, gained some upper horsepower.

I buy that I guess.:confused

Okay, so after watching Mad-mic tear through a firehawk, I began thinking. From what I understand he has just open headers. Therefore an even more reduction in back pressure. So did my car seem slower, or was it just me. I did however put on some actual mufflers, and the car pepped right back up, and is running pretty good now.

My question is, should I go to a totally non restrictive system? If I do, where will I be slower, or where will I be faster? Finally, will the computer learn to the best of it's ability, or would the prom settings need to be changed per my application?

Thanks

Craig

Craig,

You are going to have to decide which you want... less HP and more Torque, or more Torque and less HP. I'm sure there is a balance inbetween somewhere, but to find it would be expensive... you'd have to swap exhaust over and over with a dyno run in between each.

What is your ultimate goal?? Do you just want more seat of the pants power? Do you want to have low end grunt for those pesky fart cans and moustangs? Do you want to be able to hang with the moron on the 900cc crotch rocket making a run from 80 to 130?

(Note: If all of the above, start playing Powerball until you win, then by 2 new Zo6's. Why 2? One for me of course!!!! It was my idea! How soon you forget).

Craig,

Go to http://www.n2performance.com/lecture5.shtml for exhaust selection, and http://www.n2performance.com/lecture6.shtml for muffler selection. There is lots of good reading in these pages for you to make your ultimate selection. My advice? Decide what you want your car to do first, the rest will unfold from thereon.

As far as I undstand from above materials there is almost always a trade of between low end & high end performance, there is never the best of all worlds. And torque is what you should really care about, not the Hp. Did you know that everytime speed of the car is doubled, Hp has to be increased eight times in order to overcome the aerodynamic drag? Just remember that when you think of Hp gains.

You may also want to consult with Ken (site admin), he is very resoucefull at this sort of discussions.

Cheers,

Yeah, but Ken seems to have an unlimited budget!:L

Didn't Mic take that Firehawk from a roll?

Yeah Ed, I agree with you. I checked Ken's web page. He basically started with an engine block from a truck and finished with a wonderful piece of equipment. Need a lot of time, money and interest in cars & engines. I wish we lived in close proximity of you folks and learn more and more about this type of stuff. I really enjoy the car and people like you.

I often find that the wallet is the biggest factor in what I want to do!:L:L:L

"She" gets to buy whatever clothes "she" wants. In return, I get to buy what ever car parts I want! No questions asked. I still think she spends more than me.

My, aren't we full of ourselves this morning?? I have never believed "those pesty fart cans and moustangs" were competitive to Corvettes. They certainly don't market themselves that way, and I'm pretty sure they aren't in the same niche on the street. And although I have a very fast 750cc "crotch rocket", I sure don't consider myself a moron. My Mustang GT makes for a great "fun" car as in daily driver. Yeah, all that is good, but the best I enjoy is when I can take my Vette out for an exhilerating ride. So you see, there is room "out there" for everyone, dontcha think???? :nono

Didn't mean to offend :beer . Of course there is room for everyone on the road (w/exception to my grandmother, OMG :duh ).

Also, as far as Mustangs go... the Cobra IS a real threat if you are going to engage in stoplight mischief. 400HP is no joke, especially to the L98 guys out here at ~235.

Vetteboy,

just curious. Did you remove the cats or replace them in the process or leave them on? Also what type of mufflers did you put on?
on my 87, last week, I removed all 3 cats, ran a true x crossover and magnaflows and noticed a good difference in the seat of the pants thrill.

What set up did you go with?

Gras....:beer , and based on your warning we shall be on the lookout for your Grandma, just to make sure she safely completes her journey!! LOL and you know, you are right about the Cobras, a real threat to the "Stop Light Grand Prixs", I hear the '06 model will be awesome and priced right in the $35K area. Hmmmm

You can have both

I can't remember if I was reading about it on the internet or a car magazine, but there are pipes that have a movable baffle in them to create backpressure for low end torque and then open up to remove the restriction for high end flow.

Chetzki

SuperTrapp mufflers are what you want. The restricton in the exhaust can be changed my adding or removing plates in the endcap. These were real popular with the sportbike crowd 20 years ago.

I had one on a 4 Wheeler one point in time. Arent those really loud?

Yes, they can be unbearable, but my partners Kaw doesn't make any more noise than a stock bike until he twists the throttle real hard. I suppose every combo's different.

Most Borla systems also allow you to do this... I have one on my T/A. You can swap out to different lates with different diameter holes in them.

Are you sure it lost power? I have used pipes very similar to those before (the round tips, not square) and didn't lose any power... it felt better actually. The L98 exhaust system is not that large anyway, so adding a more free flow muffler shouldn't be enough to lose any power, unless you replaced it from the cats back?

He ran straight pipes out to the ZR1 style monza mufflers, that are now currently on my car :) . I was unsure if he lost power, but he said he did :confused
