Hi

Boy, seven times is a big number. I don't want to jinx myself but as a rule once my warranty is coming to an end l move into another car.

This is the first time that l have a vehicle (vette 96) without any kind of warranty. If l had seven things go wrong with mine l would dump it in a heartbeat. That is what l say, but not alway's what l would do.

I reserve $500 a year for repairs and besides the normal stuff oil, lube and such it has cost me zip. But tomorrow could be different being that l have a high mileage vette (48,000 miles).

This Spring when l hit 50,000 miles l will probably sell it and replace it with a C5.
Just don't like the C6 because of the looks not the performance and the C5 has a bigger back that my dog will enjoy.

Seven things going wrong with a 1995 Vette is nothing...dozens of things go wrong with all vettes in 10+ years and they are normal things...heres just a few that cost a bundle to fix:

water pump
optispark
window regulators
window motors
headlight motors
universal joints
wheel bearings
calipers
alternator
p/s pump
L & R mirror motors
master brake cylinder
transmission
engine
Thats just the parts then at $90+ an hour labor it really gets bad...
I could list dozens of other parts covered by warranty if you would like...
And most people do not give up on their Vette when these things go bad...you just have them fixed...its normal and my warranty covered 95% of the normal parts that need fixing and that would have added up to at least 10 times of what the warranty cost.
No one I know gives up on a Vette when things go wrong especially if the things can be covered by warranty...
I hate to tell you this but 48,000 is not a lot of miles for a Corvette...lots of times many things go bad at 30,000 miles and sometimes many of the parts last well over 100,000 miles...but to not have a warranty on a corvette if you can get one is just plain nutty ...
I also have a 1977 Vette with 128,000 miles on it and have had very little go wrong with it...still clean as it was from day one under the valve covers .
A friend of mine has a 1995 Vette and somehow a valve spring broke(he possibly rpm'd it to high too many times:L )and a valve dropped cracking a piston and ruining the block...his extended warranty covered the engine fix...$4500 no questions asked)...that is just one example of why it is a good idea to get an extended warranty...

I see that I have opened Pandora's Box... Anyways, since I also own an 86 vette (& I know that the newer vettes are more reliable), but none-the-less, they do tend to have problems at times. I choose to get a warranty. On my 86, I have replaced, alternator (twice), window motor, inner tie-rod, 02 sensor, rear defroster, coolant temp sensor,transmission, starter, rack & pinion, radiator, oil sender, front rotors, lower front-ball joint, hood prop, and rear-end. Of course, this was an older vette & I did put 15k into her, much of which was MODS & by choice, but I can't see being w/o a full coverage warranty on a vette, even if it costs me 2k for the peace of mind. I hope I don't need to use it, but at least I can relax & not worry about a catastrophy happening.

According to most insurance laws you can return the extended warranty at any time during the active warranty and get a prorated refund.

I agree. I bought a 2002 vert 9 months ago. GM wanted $2400 for 5 year 60K warranty. I contacted Warranty Direct and bought a slightly better policy for $1,200. Now you can understand why dealers push so hard to sell the extended warranty's. Where do you think the extra $1,200 goes? Doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure it out.


You should check if it's to late to cancel and save yourself the extra $1,000.

I just checked Warranty Direct and for my 98 with 38,800 miles, I get the following options:
Terms/Miles* $0 Deductible $100 Deductible
13 Months / 13,000 $ 1,424 $ 1,224
25 Months / 25,000 $ 1,959 $ 1,734

Any ideas folks? Should I pull the trigger on the 25 months?

It looks to me like you're getting a full year for only about $500 more than the 13-month plan. I'd say if you plan to keep your '98 for a while, that'd be pretty much a no-brainer.

Extended Warranties are a Keeper

Bought my 2000 vette conv with 45,000 on it. Had the extended warranty.
They replaced/repaired my trany, rearend, doorlock motors and some other smaller parts....When I traded it in for my new 04 conv. I gave them the folder that reflected over 3,000 in work in 2 years.....its worth it.

I checked with my GM/Chevy dealer before I bought my extended warranty from Warranty Direct and they said that since Warranty Direct pays with a corporate credit card that their warranty was as good as gold at any GM/Chevy dealership in the USA...also, I have been going to this one Chevy dealership for over 30 years and I trust what they say...go figure ...

PS...I was also told that if Warranty Direct were to go out of business that the company is fully insured...so its a win win situation...

Also tried Ken or Dennis Fitchner at Fitchnerchevrolet.com and was told that he couldn't give me a policy because my '01 coupe is out of warranty.

I'm struggling to replace my 'Old Republic' policy, due to thier bad customer service (took them a week to deny my last claim), with something that will actually pay for repairs. I've taken it in for oil presure sensor, tie rods, right fuel level sensor and SAI valve, and the steering wheel's telescoping actuator. I got their second to best 'Silver Plus' plan, but it still didn't cover any of the above items. ad

Anyone know someone in South Florida that can sell me a GMPP policy at a great price for an '01 coupe with 59,000 miles?

Yep...perfect example of what happens if you don't get a good warranty asap(when the Vette has low milage)...not at 59,000 miles...no one wants you because they know thats when crap starts happening:L ..and if anyone will insure you at 59,000 miles it will cost you a fortune...man I hope you have tons of money for repairs because every little thing that goes wrong with a C5 costs a fortune...good luck

Take $3000 and put it in a CD or Money Market account and hope your car never has a bad breakdown. Don't touch the money for anything else but repairs for your Corvette. That may turn out to be better that any protection plan.
