Anyone know how to get the old factory alarms working again. I found a relay under the passenger side storage box but it is not hooked up. Does anyone know where I can find information on all the components. Car is a 1971. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jerry

Alarming !

My 75 had the same problem. I reinstalled the flaser and the relay ( they set side by side under the compartment ) and found that the battery went dead every night. I guess thats why the originally pulled the relay. So I got a factory service manual and started troubleshooting the alarm circuit. What I found was the Alarm horn thats under the drivers rear quarter panel was shorted ( VERY COMMON ) so I replaced it and viola the alarm was always ingaged ! Further checking reveiled that the key switch has a theft switch behind it to keep people from just pulling it out, well its plastic and the post had broken off telling the logic that the key switch had been removed so ALARM ! short term fix I pulled the plug off the switch reset the keyswitch and everything was great. The plus side the alrm now worked. The keyswitch protector switch is available its also the one used for the headlight warning switch. About 20.00 or so. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarification. The circuit is not complicated Its just a flasher a relay and door switches and arming switch. Good Luck !:Steer

I had a similiar problem. The prior owner had put a switch in the wire leading to the factory horn. Turn it on and horn goes off no matter whether the alarm was armed or not.

I elected to go with an aftermarket keyless entry system and am adding the electric door locks.

A much better system. The factory alarm will just go off until the battery is dead, doesn't have a starter kill, etc. The new alarm solved all of these deficiencies.

Thanks guys, I am going to work on it over the weekend.

Check your assembly manual in the option section, UA6. 1971 was the last year for the alarm as an option. You should find all the info in that section. The relay (878?) is not available is is sort of tough to find, but they are available, just not in the catalogs. Chuck

My 72 electrical wiring diagram has a nice sub-section with the schematics for the alarm system. I do think parts are pretty hard to find. I am going from memory since my car is stored, but there should be two components in the passenger storage box.

Ditto with my '75, I did not know where to start, but now I think I'll take a look.

CAC rules.

Everthing looks like it is there, I found the horn attached inside the drivers side rear quarter panel, It just looks like someone disconnected everything, I'll keep tinkering, Thanks.

Do you know whare I can find a replacement alarm horn for my 75, OEM or direct replacement is fine. Thanks

You can find high and low pitch universal horns at NAPA. I had a hard time finding a replacement alarm horn. A shop manual was real handy in troubleshooting the factory alarm. Also, if you do a search you will find lots of info on this subject.

When I first got my 72 the alarm didn't work. After alot searching and testing with a meter I found the wires from the drivers door switch to the relay had slightly heated together and shorted. These wires are found inside the rear wheel body mount access cover. After cleaning, separating and shrink tubing all the wires it worked just great.

alarm problem found

Thanks for the input everyone. The wiring is brand new. I opened the horn up and the coil is shot. A rebuild kit won't even get this horn working again. Originals are hard to come by, might end up at napa or somewhere else for a replacement part. Thanks for all the suggestions.
