Hi guys and gals,

I finally cleaned-off the paint from the valve covers, but what I found at the bare metal level was pits and voids usually found in a bad casting. It is weird, for when the covers had the paint on them, the finish looked pretty smooth on the areas (i.e. like the flange where the bolts are attached to secure the cover to the head) where the paint was still intact (not peeling-off).

So I am looking for a filler that is easy to apply and sand-off to mask these voids and pits. Any recommendations?

I've sucessfully used JB Weld in stupider places! God bless, Cris

Hey Chris,

The last time I used JB Weld was to fix a crack on the intake radiator water neck adapter in my old 89 Jeep Cherokee. Never leaked, never failed, and by the way, it is right now being driven around in Camp Pendleton, Ca by a young Marine (I know, for I had giving it to my son, and when he returned from his second Iraq tour, he sold it to a fellow Marine).

What I am not sure about is if JB Weld will hold Powder-coated paint. Is it conductive?

p.s. I dropped off your old L81 heads at the local head shop on Wednesday. They could be ready as early as tomorrow!

I work for an aluminum casting foundry and we occasionally use a product called Devcon on certain applications. I am not sure about the conductivity, but you can do a Google search and their website has technical info for all of their products.

Thanks EZ. I will check them out.

I used to use this stuff called Alumi-weld or Alumi-bond or, oh yeah, ALUMA-LEAD body filler by Ditzler. It has 1 part resin and 1 part Aluminum powder component. Mix it and it's like Aluminum bondo, but it grinds like Aluminum.

Thanks Wish,

I did a search, but I didn't get many hits. I found one Porshe Forum and a Corvette forum talking about it, but apparently, the stuff is not produced any more.

However, in my search I also found an interesting historical chronicle about the Ditzler Brothers and their connection to Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) and the George V. Arth & Son's 125 year old paint & collision shop in Oakland, California. Thanks!

Gerry,

Yeah, I pretty much did the same thing.
Ditzler was sold to PPG and they don't have it on any of their product listings. Bummer.
