Started it for the first time after a complete overhaul. The engine is great, but some small stuff is hosed up. The power stearing pump is not working (ordered a replacement) and the heater shut off value is leaking (also ordered a replacement).

I followed the Hynes book's advice and ran it up to 50-30 ten times to break in the rings. I will wait till 500mi to change the oil. Also baby the car untill the break in period is over. Any more advice?

I ordered the parts from Zip, so far I am having good luck with them. Good prices, quick delivery, and most of the time they have the part in stock.

Well it's ok for the rings (if it's not smoking) but I changed to Mobile one at 500 miles and It didn't loosen up till after 40,000
good for long life! The way I could tell was fuel economy it kept getting better! also the oil temps wer higher than normal for 20,000 or so

fresh motor

From everything I've read and heard, starting out with synthetic is not recommended (even by the oil companies) because the superb lubricity will hinder break in of rings. You may have excessive blowby and oil comsumption for a long time.
Also, everything I've read says it take up to 2-3K miles before you should switch to synthetic. I suppose it may depend on what kind of rings you used. Iron will seat quicker, chrome takes the longest, and moly is in between.
I'm sure you could check out the Mobil and Redline websites to get more specific info.
Good luck on your rebuilt runner.

At this point I have a total of 3mi on the car. I will drain the oil (synthetic) and go with regular stuff (any suggestions on this). Also I called my machinist and he echoed the same comments, he also said that I should wait till 2k for the switch to synthetic. You guys are great, thanks for the good advice, you might have saved me a new engine!!!!

Just to be sure.....
1. Start with regular oil
2. Change it at 500mi
3. Make the swith to synthetic at 2k

What is a good oil to start with, break in period????

Just about any 10-30
use a good filter and change it at 500 too
