:wI just bought my 1st corvette, a 1985 with 145000 kms, and believe it or not I can't find out which type of oil (10W30 etc.) it uses. The lettering has warn off the oil cap and theres no sticker on the door. Can somebody tells me what the car uses stock.

I've seen some discussions about using synthetic oil but mines not, can I switch now without changing all the seals etc. What's the normal running temp range for the oil? Any advise would be appreciated.

You can open up a pretty big can of worms asking what type of oil to use. There have been many debates on this issue. One thing is certain though, synthetics are better, and are factory fill on new corvettes.

I am not sure what factory fill was in 85. What oil have you been using in other vehicles? Have you had success with that oil?

I use mobil 1 synthetic on my car, but the motor was recently rebuilt. The general just is that one shouldn't switch to synthetic on a motor with many miles/kms. In my other vehicles, I use castrol GTX conventional. Personal preference.

Since you are in Canada, you need to choose the correct weight oil for the temperature range you will be operating the car in.

Welcome to the site, and you will have more than enough info here to make a determination what oil to use!!

Thanks Hib, A very interesting and informative article. They'll always be "tappets" to me, hence "tappet clearance". An argument for desmodromic ? Roger.

Wow, thanks for all the great info. Vettes are only a summer time toy in Canada, she'll be parked in the winter, so I think I'll stick with the Castrol GTX 10W30.

Hib,
I just had my 85' rebuilt stock, and the guy that rebuilt it said to use Mobil one, will I have issues using Mobil one rather then normal oil. It only has about 500 miles with the mobil one since rebuild.
Thanx Gordon
