Flowmaster 40's or 50's?

I've decided that it's time for the vette to actually sound like a vette. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Flowmaster 40 series Deltaflows or the 50 series. I know that the 40's are supposed to be louder than the 50's by a significant amount. I'm also wondering if anyone knows where I could find some audio clips of both. I want the deep growl, but I also like to cruise with the tops off and the radio on. What do you think? ;help Oh yeah, I have a stock setup including the cat

HI nj... Have you considered a chambered exhaust system? I have the system from Mid America Motorworks, and love it. It provides the throaty rumble at low RPMs, and screams at WOT. I've been able to have converstations, and listen to music etc. while driving. I believe there is a system available for those with cats... but someone else would have to confirm.

Ive got 40's on mine and are getting ready to switch them to 50s...the 40s to me sound kinda splatty......very loud during accerlation.....not bad at cruising but just kinda splatty..

I too find that the 40's are noisy on acceleration. Cruising is not bad at all but, when you romp on it people sure know you're there.

It's all in what you like. If you want to be a kid again than go for it. If you don't like the noise, than keep it stock. Or do what I did and set it up with true duals and no cats with the flowmasters. Now they hear ya coming. LOL

I'm partial to my hooker sidemounts with side pipes... I run them wide open!

:upthumbs Very nice, I have the same set-up.

I have 50s on a 72 roadster with a 454 a little loud when you step on it but very nice sound at idle and cruising

Is it possible to have a conversation with the windows down with the 40's, when cruising or when accelerating? I'd like the sound to have some growl to it, but I guess I don't want it so loud that I can't have a conversation or I get a headache after a few hours

Accelerating? Um it's kinda loud...:D

I like loud cars but my 40's sound splatty....

I have the 50's on my car. They sound great but they are a tight fit.I acually wish they were a little louder but i still have the stock ram-horns on it.When i get headers on it(hopefully soon)it should sound perfect.

So where is a good place to pick up some flowmasters? I don't have a Midas or shop nearby, so I'm primarily working on the web. I'd also like them here by Friday if possible. Anyone have any experiences, good or bad?

have you looked at the Dynomax Ultra-turbo flow muffs?? they flow better than Flowmaster, better sound (no popping), and are stainless. they look great and sound killer. i ran then on my car before i switched to sidepipes for the new motor. either way, you can order from Summit or Jegs and have them in a couple days. also check with the local auto parts wharehouses fro NAPA, Carquest, Schuck's, etc. etc. some times they have them in stock for the same price or cheaper than Summit.

I suspect that any muffler shop would have them. I went into my local shop and they had them in stock. Same day installation.

I made a mistake with my exhaust that im going to correct eventually. I wanted to something unique compared to all the flowmaster out there so I did glasspacks. I cut the end of the Y-pipe making it a true dual, ran 2 1/4 pipes back with no cats, and then the glasspacks. It sounds very mean, and loud, but on deceleration you get a LOT of popping which I hate. Im going to get some better pics, and maybe a sound clip, but this is all I got for now:

Again, I wish I had gone with the Flows, and from experience on my Camaro I would go with the 40s. But then again I like it LOUD. I figure once I swap the motor Im going to do headers and a new exhaust setup, but for now Ill with the popping. It does still sound mean though, its got a loud growl.

Good Luck, Let us know what you pick.

How is the interior sound/resonance with the 40's? I'd actually like to hear that exhaust from the inside of the car (of course), but some say that they resonate quite a bit inside the cockpit. Anyone have experience with the amount of interior resonance?

Well I just put in an order for some Flowmaster 40's series Delta Flows, and I'm having them put on Friday afternoon. I'll let you know how it all plays out, thanks for the advice!

I'm going to be anxious to hear how you like it. Just today I took my 79 with Hooker headers, no cats and 50 series flowmasters to a muffler shop because the previous owner set it up so the mufflers hang down below the bumper and dump straight out the mufflers, straight out the back. I don't like the mufflers hanging down like that, but the shop told me they were too big to tuck up under the car like a stock muffler. He said I'd have to go to 40's because apparently they are smaller, to tuck them up like stock with a turn down. My problem with that is I really like the 50's, they sound great to me, they make great sound on acceleration, and are not too loud at all cruising along.
