I made a mistake with my exhaust that im going to correct eventually. I wanted to something unique compared to all the flowmaster out there so I did glasspacks. I cut the end of the Y-pipe making it a true dual, ran 2 1/4 pipes back with no cats, and then the glasspacks. It sounds very mean, and loud, but on deceleration you get a LOT of popping which I hate.
But then again I like it LOUD. I figure once I swap the motor Im going to do headers and a new exhaust setup, but for now Ill with the popping. It does still sound mean though, its got a loud growl.
Hey guy...you can pick up a balance tube (H-pipe) from Summit Racing for $32 + shipping. You'll increase your power, keep your sound, but get rid of the popping on deceleration. How do I know? Because I have the exact same setup as you! Check it for yourself here
I'll be gathering some pics and sound clips in the coming weeks.

sounds like a good idea, ill check that out. Hey I was thinking about doing headers seeing I still have my mammoth exhaust manifolds on there. Are they hard to change out? Did you do yours yourself? Im just wondering because space is so confined in our years. I do have access to lifts at the shop where I work, which will make it a lot easier. But any input on the difficulty?

Headers are easy...Soak your manifold bolts a day or two prior to removing them wiht ole PB Blaster to make sure they dont break off in the head....Then once you get them off put the car on a lift (or jackstands) and install the headers from underneath. I have Hooker Super Comp Ceramics on my 73 and they went in like a breeze....then you ll need the collector to hook up the remaining exhaust..

Well Friday afternoon I took the vette to get the new mufflers on... awesome! I'm really glad that I didn't go with the 50's, they wouldn't have been loud enough. The vette has a very deep idle now, and I love the deep growl when I take off. There is interior resonance at 1400 rpm and at 2500 to a less extent. I kinda like the hum anyway. I can get a taste of what it sounds like outside the car! As far as interior noise otherwise, it's quiet enough to have conversations. I don't think it's much louder than with the old mufflers in the interior. I do have the stock 350, cat, and Y-pipe, so I'm sure that makes a difference. Installation was $70, which included installing the mufflers (with turn downs) and bending a new pipe from the Y, so the mufflers would be tucked high up above the lower body panel line. I paid just under $100 each for stainless steel DF 40's from JEGS, so for $270 I'd say it's money well spent.

I'll post some pictures and hopefully audio. Now I just have to keep my foot off the gas!

Very Happy for you nj7000,

I was looking for mufflers myself for my 74. I didn't know what to buy before I read your post. So all of the guy's here who replied to your post convinced me. I ordered 2 FlowMasters 40's series today. I will get them tomorow and have them install on Saturday morning. I can't wait. I have hooker headers on a true dual exaust with NO CAT. So it should sound very agressive !!!

personnally I like it loud so I guess I made the right choice. Can't wait to see how it sounds. I'll let you all know Saturday when I come out of the muffler shop.

Tepot, I'll especially be interested in hearing what you think because I've also got headers into true dual exhaust with no cats. If possible can you post a pic once the job is done?

C3 4ME, I'll do better than that. I'll post a picture and also include a sound clip so you can ear what it sounds like.

Just as an FYI... I posted the pics of my header and H-pipe setup in the thread I linked to in my post above...

Ok. didn't have time to get a picture and sound clips but the flowmasters sounds great.

I don't know if it's only me. but I dont find them loud at all. On idle it only gave me a little rumble. nothing too impressive. When I drive I can barely ear the sounds they produce.

so now I don't know why people here on the forum said they were too loud.

I've got headers on dual exaust with no CAT and those flowmaster are not loud at all. they only make that nice rumble.

When we were done installing them. the muffler shop coudln't wait to ear the sound and they were disapointed big time. For a wide open exaust system I would've expected alot more.

So what do I need now. Is it that I need a performance Cam to make it sound like a real muscle car?

1) More cubes...
2) No mufflers...glass packs and about 12 months of high RPM driving.

I can email you sound clips of my car...and a video of it doing 140mph fly-by.
PM if interested...

Evolution, I looked but cant' find the pics of your setup. Can you PM them to me? Tepot, if you get a chance I'd stil be interested in seeing a pic of your setup also. BTW, mine has a bigger cam so it does make some noise with the 50 series.

I just saw the thread and this is probably too late, but the Walker Dyna Max true fit muffler is one of the best performance mufflers on the market and with out the noisy tin can rattling sound from flowmasters. We sell them all and on top of that the Walkers even fit better as they are made for a Vette where as flowmasters are actually just a bunch of universal mufflers that by design can be made to fit almost anything. More often installed on Mustangs and Camaros.

What pics specifcally? (Which part of the system?) I have a link in post #21 above. Is that what you are looking for?

I have 40's on mine with no H-Pipe. There are no frequency problems and personally I think the sound fine. As for loudness... I can set off rice burner alarms! hehe!

we have the same set up right? Dual with glasspacks and no cats? Why did you say 12 months high RPM driving? Does that break in the glasspacks or something.

Correct, we have the same setup, short of maybe different headers and I have an H-pipe ("Balance tube") now. Also, it looks as if your exhaust is routed differently. Mine appears to run more "straight back" than yours...

The glasspacks are just that...perforated tubes with fiberglass packing around them. The fiberglass is supposed to arrest some of the pulses coming from the exhuast. In short, they are a very basic "muffler".
Eventually, all that fiberglass slowly burns up and gets exhausted out the tubes with the rest of the engine exhaust. So, after a while, you basically have no "muffling" taking place.

I said "High RPMs" as kind of a joke, as a means to help blow out the fiberglass faster :L

haha o alright I got ya, cool. Yah I still have the stock manifolds :( lol, Im planning on getting some Hooker Super Competition ceramic coated. Did you put yours in yourself? If so how hard was it to get thos big manifolds outta there?

Evolution, if you've got a picture straigt on from the back of the car, that's what I'm most interested in. I just don't like the way my 50's hang down below the bumper.

Well, I don't have your standard mufflers anymore...so, the comparison isn't going to be perfect. However, when I did have regular mufflers, there was a little bit showing in the rear, but mostly the turn-down pipe on the muffler tip.

Below are pics of my current setup (minus the old headers in the one pic. I included that for the sake of showing how my exhaust pretty much goes straight back). There's also the link I posted in message #21 above, which takes you to the thread about my new headers. There's different pics in that post. Those might be more of what you are looking for in terms of "from the back". Otherwise, I can go out and take another picture now...
