Does anyone have any thoughts or other on either Flowmasters or Dynomax mufflers for a 78?
I'm looking converting my exhaust to a true dual with headers (no cats).
Also, anyone know of a good exhaust shop in the Seattle area?
Thanks !
(newbee) Shawn

I'll be able to give you some feedback later on this week after I change the exhaust set-up on my C4. ;)

Shawn,

Grab a cup of coffee, or a beer or favorite soda and check out these past threads on Mufflers I used the "Search" feature and typed in Mufflers and up popped 83 past threads ;) Happy reading..

The Dynomax Turbos out flow the Flowmasters.

The Dynomax oval Case Ultra Flows out flow the Dynomax Turbos

Sound is a matter of preference, the flow numbers for all out performance cannot be denied though saying I guess it is all what the end result you are after is in choosing a muffler,,different sounds or all out performance capabilities

Ken,
thanks - let me know what you used for your set up

Master Yoda - I was up til 1am (or was it midnight with the time change); some really good stuff there. Thanks for turning me on to the search.
But now i'm confused :crazy chambered exhaust or true duals? I want performance but not an over amount ungodly sound inside the car. Maybe Heidi can give me her insight when she install's her new system?

555 - i read the flow reports. yep Dynomax is truely free flowing! But does that come with increased sound all around?

good advice from all - keep it coming :)

Thanks - Shawn:beer

I have been very happy with the two sets of Flowmasters I've owned. The first set (available, cheap) fit the stock exhaust system and allowed for a noticeable improvement without objectionable sound levels for everyday.

The new ones fit the 3" system behind my 406 and my comments would parallel the above. The sound is very pleasant for normal driving but my new term for the 'go' pedal is the 'roar pedal'. This car really yells when I stomp on it!

Either will probably be satisfyng to you and my bet would be that other areas of modifications would yield more improvement than the difference between these mufflers. The cruising RPM will dictate, somewhat, the cockpit noise as well.

mufflers

Been checking into exhaust options as well. Leaning towards a stainless system. I was told by a reliable source that Paragon has one of the best complete sytems out there, with an "offroad" muffler. I've spoke to them a few times about it. Was told it performs and sounds very good. Not sure if anyone else knows about this.

i ran the stainless Dynomax ultra-flow's with my 350 for two years. it was a great sounding system. quiet when idling and just cruizing around with just a hint of throat. when you step on it the exhaust was noticable but not obnoxious. the stainless was easy on the eyes as well, but not the pocket at $160 a muffler. the whole Dynomax true dual system (headers, mid-pipes, muffs and tips) was about $650 with the stainless mufflers. most parts stores can get them, just order for a '68-'74 Vette, they will fit. you may also want to look into local smog laws before you spend the money. it would be a crying shame to waste time and money on making your car illegal. have fun with it, brian

Brian @ $650 you only ran the exhaust for 2 years? Why did you switch? Curious is all. I like the look of S.S., the fact that I shouldn't have to worry about replacing it anytime soon, and I just hate seeing rust even if it is just exhaust. Just about finished going through the entire underside of the car and that should be the finishing touch, till I break something. Thanks for the feedback.

Chambered Exhaust

Hi Shawn!
Chambered exhaust and the 78 has an appointment for next Tuesday and I will probably pick it up Wednesday evening, I'll let you know!
Gads! I just about can't wait!

Mark,
i swapped out the exhaust for the new motor i built. the 2.5" duals could not flow enough to allow the motor to rev. i went with the Hooker side-pipes, and found the glass-packs don't flow enough either, JCL baffles on the way. if those don't work, i am stuck in the land of strait pipes and ear plugs. the good news is the old exhaust looked as good as the day i installed it and no signs of burnt packing in the mufflers. hopefully you won't break anything, Brian

Brian,
I'm working my way to the fun part of this project. (Bigger Motor) I have the original 350/270HP but hope to drop a 383 in there at some point. I like a nice performance sound but I want to able to cruise in it too, without ear plugs. Figure if I invest in a good exhaust system I won't want to cut it up or change it anytime soon. There's been some decent info here to help me with a little decision making. Guess a lot of it is preference too. Fun hobby so far, for the past year anyway.

Mark,
it sounds like the main thing you need to do is get good headers. almost every small block build, especially the 383's, like to have equal length 1.75" header tubes and at least 2" dual pipes. the smaller the pipes the more low end your motor will have, and obviously the bigger pipes are suited better for high rpm. i think your best bet would be equal length 1.75" headers with thick flanges and a good 2.25"-2.5" exhaust pipe. that configuration should flow up to 350-400hp, anything over that then i would go for 3" up to 500hp. the only problem is rear ground clearence with 3" pipe, under the diff, and bumpy roads. i drug the **** out of my 2.5" stuff, so the side-pipes were sort of a last resort. if looks is important, then go ceramic coated! they hold there nice clean look, and if you get mud, oil, dirt, etc. caked on them, some Mother's metal polish and they look brand new in no time. good luck with the project, Brian.

exhaust

Hey guys, I am in the process of installing dynomax equal length 1 5/8 ceramic coated headers, 3" pipes, and new 3" 40 series flowmasters on my 383 powered 1974 shark. Will let you know tomorrow how this turns out. Do you think I made a mistake not going with the 1 3/4" headers? Oh well, trial and error. Thanks for being here for guys like me.:cool

rgtrough, let us know how the dynomax fit. Do you have PS, AC? Fred.

dynomax/flowmaster

Hey Fred, sorry I took so long to reply but I have been busy. I installed the headers on Monday, took the vette to my exhaust guy Tuesday night, and picked it up Wednesday after work. The ceramic coated equal length Dynos look great. Had to jack up the engine to get around the clutch arms, but went on fine. The exhaust guy advised against the 3" for fear of dragging under the rear end and I went along. First things first, the performance really seems to be enhanced with the mod. Secondly, the sound and the fury is fantastic. I work with a few gearheads and they all approved. At idle and cruise it is just a low rumble, but at wot, stand back, it is sweet. I fully recommend this combo.:cool

Would you mind telling me where you got that price? Locally, they seem to be in the $250/muffler range. :(

Just some Eye Candy (I run Dynomax as well)

Joe,
i bought mine at the local CarQuest warehouse. the headers were $110 and the pipe kit was about $135. note, the headers were not ceramic coated, just plain-Jane painted. as for the price difference, you have me stumped. the prices are usually a lot higher in Alaska. maybe they were dealing in high volume, lots of guys run those headers in swamp rigs and converted Jeeps and the mufflers are on almost every airboat up here.

Well, I found a similar price on the mufflers, online, so I'm set. And DynoMax's $20 rebate offer covers the shipping, so it worked out well. If you ever need to order exhaust parts online, A-1 Performance really treated me well.

Actually, the car is at my mechanic's place right now, getting the mufflers put on.
