Fog lights both out??? Center light in fog button no on either

I just bought a 98 and neither of the fog lights were working. I assumed it was the fuse. I replaced the fuse in the box inside the engine and they still don't work. I then noticed that when you push in the fog light button on the dash, the little light in the center of that button does not come on to indicate that the fogs are on. When you push the fog light button, I notice it does make sort of a clicking sound at the fuse box in the engine. Does anyone have suggestions on what might be wrong or what else I might need to try checking. Maybe the switch itself is bad (although the trunk release still works which seems to be on the same switch). Maybe both bulbs are just out, but would that cause the little light in the center of the button on the dash to not come on anymore? Please advise of anything I can check out. Thanks!

Are the head lights on? They need to be on.

yes lights on

Yes, the headlights were on and working fine. I hate to have to take it to the dealer to have them figure it out....

JJCP, there's an old saying in medicine, when trying to diagnose an illness: "when you hear hoof-beats, think horses, not zebras." It means don't worry about the problem being of an exotic nature, since the common nature problem is frequently the issue. Start with the simplest explanation for what could be wrong, and if that doesn't solve it, move on to the more complex ones.

Try replacing both bulbs. They may be burned out, or you may have a loose connection on them. If that doesn't solve the problem, then perhaps you can start considering an electrical system issue.

Just my $0.02

You may want to make sure that the high beams are not on. Most fog lights disable once you put the high beams on. Just a thought.
