For Looks Or Function?

Are the slots in the bottom of the tailpanel on my 03 for looks or do they have a purpose such as assisting in brake cooling or exhaust deflection for heat or gases?
I"m doing my homework on an idea of mine. Mount 4 LED flashing tube lights into these 4 slots and hook them to the center brake light. Also, can this cause a hazard in the electrical system or computer? I seen one on the rear of a Harley too, it really gets your attention in traffic.

I think that they are supposed to be for muffler cooling. But I suspect another function is to visually break up the big butt on the C5.

I like the safety aspect of it, but the heat from the mufflers could destroy the lights.

Why dont the heat destroy the rear panel then? Agi

Heat can distort it. Mid America sells panel inserts just for that problem. I also agree with visually breaking up the big butt aspect.

Hib Halverson may have a better answer to this question than I. The back end of the C5 is essentially a plastic composite material that I believe is heat tested. The slots back there, to the best of my knowledge, may have some cooling/venting associated with them, but I suspect they are more principally intended for an aesthetic way of visually breaking up the big back end.

I think it may have been detailed in the book "All Corvettes are Red". They are there to let the hot air escape off the mufflers, and not collect within the bumper cover, distorting it.
