Lets try not to confuse ya! the rear main seal goes directly around the crankshaft at the rear of the engine. What some people call the front main seal is located in the TIMING COVER. In my part of the country, we call it a timing cover seal. That could change in other parts of the country!!!! the front seal is,like I said, mounted in the timing cover, the timing cover is mounted to the front of the block, and the front hub(LT1) or the harmonic balancer(all others) has a sealing surface that slides into it to seal the front of the engine!!!! hope this has helped!!!!!! Ok, so what is the front crank seal? My favorate dealer replaced it a few months ago, and the oil leak I have seems to be coming from the same area in the front of the engine. Today I had someone check things out for me and said that my front main seal seems to be leaking. I have a puddle in the inside of the flywheel cover that I am trying to diagnose. Seems to be both Oil and transmission fluid. Trying to track this down. Did I spend $400 on a tailpipe bearing and no fix to the leak?

I know what the timing cover seal is, but people seem to be refering to it as the front main seal or crank seal.
