Has anyone put a fuel cell in a shark. I think I can get one to fit, it is just a question of where the fill hole will end up in relation to the one in the body.
Any pictures would help alot.

I put one in a 68 racecar but it doesn't have a spare so that may be a problem for a street car. I put a 22 gallon Fuel Safe in and the fill hole is in the correct place. They have several different sizes so you will need to do some measuring of the space you have. Sorry I don't have any close up pictures that would help.

I Had already decided not to run a spare tire. What kind of modifications did you have to make?

Tom

I just took a picture with my phone and will try to get it posted quickly.

Here is a picture taken from right behind the passenger tire. I kinda wish I had made it lower, but that could still be done by changing the brackets a bit.

I welded brackets to the differential cross member and the rear frame. There is an angle iron cage around the metal encasement of the fuel cell. The bottom angle irons can be unbolted to remove the assembly.

The filler is right in line with the original gas door hole and about the same distance down as the original tank. As I mentioned earlier, It would probably have been better to drop the tank lower for a lower center of gravity.

One thing that might have to be solved for you by buying a tank with a different shape/size is that my luggage area has been removed for easier access to the rear suspension.
Good luck

PS Oh, the manufacturer recommends changing cells and foam every 5 years. I think that is probably a requirement for some race organizations.

You dont Know the dimmensions do you? My body is off the frame so I can really only guess at how much space there really is. I have a 78 so the size of the space should be a little taller, but should still have close to the same width and length dimensions

Tom
P.s. Can you see the tank from behind the car?

I've looked for my Fuel Safe info and found that it is an Enduro, ED122B. The size is 25" in length, 17" width and a height of 13 1/2". Go here for more detail on Fuel Safe. http://www.fuelsafe.com/pdf/Road%20Racing.pdf

You need to measure the distance from the rear compartment to the center of your gas fill hole in the deck and then work from there to see what fits best for you to get the filler located correctly.

There are other manufacturers than Fuel Safe so you should check out their available sizes too.

I spoke with a Fuel Safe Rep at a trade show last year and he indicated that they could make a bladder to fit in a Vette gas tank but it would be around $1,500 to $2,000. I think mine was around $800 including a gas guage sender. (that I've never installed...:(
Good Luck

Thanks a bunch, I saw in their catalog that they actually mention corvette tank inserts by name. They eveen have a picture of one. It looks like a good piece, but a bit out of my price range. I have found a few I think will fit and they fall right in your range of measurements. The only thing is I want a sending unit, it would drive me nuts not knowing how much fuel I have (its a thing I have I guess), but it doeas not look like the cells with the rubber inner liner are easy to put a sending unit in. All the units I've seen would require a hole to drilled in the bladder to allow the sender to pass through. That would seem to me to compromise the integrity of the rubber liner. But I have never actually done it and, as usual I could be wrong.

The distance between the frame rails is about 1 meter, the distance from the rear frame bar to the rear compartment wall is about 46cm. A 22 gallon fuel safe tank will fit, a 32 gallon tank is a very close fit an may require a little trimming and fiberglass cutting here & there.

Ol Blue, what kind of gauge sender do you have? I may still need one for a fuel safe cell but it has to be 0-90 ohms.

Another thing, why did you mount the cell that high up? I'm mouting mine considerably lower to drop the cg.

I bought the cell with the sender already installed and the Fuel guage from the same place. I've looked at the instructions for the guage and it doesn't indicate what Ohms it is.

I checked the Fuel Safe site and it says to specify what Ohm guage you are using when you order the sender. http://www.fuelsafe.com/pdf/Parts_&_Acces.pdf

As to why I installed the cell so high, I can't honestly say. I was pretty stressed out during the build due to the extremely tight schedule. When the car was accepted for the Monterey Historics for the Corvette 50th anniversary I was suprised and started late on the car. See picture on the lower left of my start in February and lower right picture of mid August, 4 days before the race. I was working full time (well, supposedly...:) and was making decisions on the fly, some good, some not so good.

I was also trying to make sure the car would meet the stringent historic rules for acceptance at Monterey as I understood them so I wouldn't be rejected after all of the effort. This location is exactly where it was when it was raced, so I put it back in the same place. I think I was also little concerned about lowering it in case of being rear ended. I still may drop it at some point and build a better crash barrier around it then.
