Fuel gauge help! Autometer is killing ME!

I need some help wiring a fuel gauge. (I know the scenario is long but bear with me) I have a 64 convert. The fuel sender works and reads 0 ohms when empty and 90 ohms when full. There are three wires that connect to the sender. Ignition, sender, and ground. My stock fuel gauge works (it's off by a 1/8 or so, but it's close) The problem is; I'm trying to intall autometer phantom gauges and the fuel level is killing me. If I hook it up as the instructions say: Sender wire to guage, ignition to gauge and ground to tank ground it reads way past full. If I disconect the tank sender ignition wire the gauge will read opposite. I.E 1/4 tank when there is 3/4 tank.

Autometer "help" says that because the sender is from the bottom of the tank and not the top it reads "backwards". But I'm thinking if the sender reads 90 ohms when full and the gauge reads 90 ohms as full it should work! I've tried every combination of switching wires to "reverse" the reading but no use.

When the gauge is hooked up and I push the tank float down (empty) the gauge reads full and vice-versa.

I know that someone else out there has aftermarket gauges, can anyone shed some light here?

Welcome abourd

I dont have a answer for you on the electrical side and I have not personally installed a fuel sender in a midyear (I plan on doing one soon thought) Anyhow I am a heating an a/c mecanic and i had a call on a heating oil tank fuel gauge reading opposite and what I had jound was that the float arm was installed with the tank partially full and when the gauge was installed the float caused the gauge to be install backward so that when it was full it read empty and vice versa.I dont know if the arm on our fuel senders could possibly go that way

Good Luck

Is there a way to simply flip the numbering on the gauge by putting on a new fascia ??

The fuel float is set correctly, I can take a hanger and push the float down making the ohm meter go to zero and pull the float up to 90. I can't change the gauge face because I can'r get into it without tearing up the bezel. I've seen lots of mid years with auto meter gauges in place of the originals. (of course now I can't find anyone that has done it but...) I'm hoping someone out there has this set up. thanks ---

I just put Autometer gauges in my other plastic car. This is what worked for me.

Disconnect the ignition wire from the sender and reverse the connections on the gauge. i.e., the wire from the Ing. Should connect to the terminal marked sender on the Autometer and the wire from the sender should be connected to the gauges + or Ing. terminal.
