My 1964 convertible has a 20gal tank. Does anyone no if a 36gal tank would work in it's place. (if i could get one) Would i loose the spare tire carrier? What would i need to move or do to make this work? Thanks all. Mark.

Mark,

I haven't seen a reproduction 36 gallon tank out there but did see what was supposed to be a complete original setup on e-Bay a while back. It went for something around $5,500 though. You can still retain the spare tire carrier as the tank mounts on top of the frame but it does have a special rear compartment cover to cover it and even those alone have been very expensive if you can find one.

Mark,

Good luck in your search.

The above is from a very, very, very old issue of VETTE Magazine. The prices are so far out of date as to be prehistoric. ;)

Bob,

It figures that you would have been able to quickly find an old article on the subject - you must have a great system for organizing the magazines. :D

Mark,

I did see, at one time at least, that Tracy Performance had an original setup in their inventory but there was no price shown. I'm not sure if the Grand Sport replica builders such as Jeff Leach might make or know of a source for the tank. In either case this would likely be an expensive conversion.

It also requires a number of interior fiberglass parts to fill the gap between the sides and rear of the tank and the quarter inner panels and provide the mounting planes for the tank cover, and NONE of those parts have been available for over 30 years. If someone really wanted to do this job, it would probably cost $15K-$20K in parts (IF you could find them), plus a LOT of fiberglass part fabrication.

I had a '65 L-76 Tanker coupe (with A/C) back in the early 70's that I body-off restored; it's in Colorado now, and is worth a fortune.

Thanks, everyone for the info! Probably best to stick with what I have. I do thank everyone again for the time spent to respond. Excellent article from vette magizine. Mark.

John,

Was it dark green? I bet you still have a picture of it somewhere.

Gary

Yup, it was Glen Green with black leather, telescopic, teak, etc.; after I finished it, I drove it in one Club parade, had it in a show that afternoon, and a guy walked up to me with an obscene amount of cash, said it was his now, and I let him have it - one of many I should have kept, but who knew that in 1973 :eyerole

John that obscene amount of cash in '73 is probably NOTHING compared to what a restored C2 would go for now even without the tanker option. :)

A guy I know has his '65 in the same paint shop mine was just at. It's not a tanker but it's a '65 coupe, 327/365hp, factory A/C, factory KH KO's, factory installed side pipes, PB, PW, telescopic steering column and completed thru a body-off restoration done by my painter. I don't know what the realistic value on the car is currently but a few months ago I saw an identicle car (different color but same options) listed on the ProTeam site and their price was $119,900! Granted, I know factory A/C adds some value, but D*MN, that's pricey for a '65 SB car that's not a tanker.
