I was at the GM dealer this A.M. checking on NOS parts. For the heck of it I asked him to check on PN.# 6262640. A clock for a 73. THEY GOT IT! $397.61.
OUCH!
Give me a dozen. @ the same cost as a ROLEX! LOL

I think Year One and Corvette Central have repros, quartz, and actually work, for about 100 bucks.

Jeff,
Don't assume that any part that you find at a dealer is NOS or correct in fit form and function. The dealer will most likely sell you the most recent service replacement part which may or many not be similar to your original.

Can be a very expensive mistake if you're trying to do a correct restoration.

Thanks Mick, that's what I don't want to do.

Anyone know what causes these clocks to go bad??????
It seems like they're junk after 2 days coming off the GM line.
TIA

the original "electric" clocks work by having a small set of points open/close and initialize a small electric clock motor that runs the clock. after a period of time, these points corrode or fuse together from the electric charge passing through them. most of the clocks that stop can be easily repaired by using an emory board or nail file on the points to smooth them out (and seperate them if they have fused). someone had posted a very complete repair guide previously (i would like to take credit for it, but it wasn't me!!). this will explain the simple repair procedure.

try this site. it should help!

Actually Steve, when the points close it energizes a small solenoid that puts tension on a spring mechanism and ratchet. As the mechanism unwinds or "ticks" down the ratchet teeth it eventually reaches the end of it's travel and the points touch, engaging the solenoid again to repeat the process. You can hear it reset ever so often if it's quite enough in the car.
What usually happens is the mechanism jams when the points are closed and it burns up the solenoid. At that point it's pretty hard to repair but not impossible I guess. I was really lucky, mine was gummed up and stopped with the points open. I was able to take it all apart, clean the dust and gum out and it's been working perfectly for the past couple of years. I let it run on a small battery for several days on my workbench and kept adjusting it until it kept pretty accurate time. That's what you do in the cold winter months in CT when you're bored and can't drive your car!:D :crazy

i stand corrected.

the link provided, however is a good source of information for clock repair. for a non NCRS restoration or replacement, the quartz conversion is almost a must, in my opinion, for reliablity and longevity.

Oh yeah, I agree, it's excellent information link. I'm sorry, no offense intended I just got a little carried away there. When I was little (a long time ago!), I remember hearing the clock in my dad's car make the same sound, so when I figured out how it worked after all these years I just thought it was neat.

Best Regards......Bill
