Just thought I'd share this...

In order to properly & completely dial in your OBD2 equipped car (after mods have been added) you need the LT1 Edit. This is the only way that you can adjust all the different parameters i.e. spark, timing, fuel pressure, idle etc...

The LT1 Edit is a vehicle specific (need a unit for each PCM) computer program that allows for you to adjust these things. Once you have it, you can go in and retune as often as you need to (w/ each additional mod). From what I understand, w/o LT1 Edit you are never really taking full advantage of the mods because the PCM is still reading the stock settings. With LT1 Editing you can dyno tune the car (mod specific) and get the most out of your mods.

Bad news is the LT1 Edit is $450 and is only available from only one source: www.carputing.com. No shops have it (as it is car specific) so it's a "bring your own" thing and then a dyno-tune shop can do the rest. It takes 2 to 3 hours to dial in the car so you are looking at around $300 or so in "dyno" cost.
IMO a worthwhile investment if you want your modded 'vette running at it's true potential.

For more info on this go to www.lt1edit.com
Great site w/ very helpful members who know their stuff.

Lots of performance/dyno/tuning shops in my area and they all said the same thing..."Get the LT1 Edit & we can get her runnin' at peak level!"

So that is my battleplan. I'll keep ya' posted...

Good to hear Jeff. I've not played with the LT1/4 so couldn't help you out on your other post. From what I hear its the "thing" for LT1/4's.

I have EASE (which will do OBD2 cars with the right cable) and CATS. Both took a bit of learning (still) but they have helped me out with mine. BTW EASE was about the same price ... maybe more ...

:w

Wow, that's $750 after you figure in the cost of the unit and the cost of the dyno time!:cry

The car can honestly handle the changes you have made; you will gain a few HP by truly dialing the car in, but not $700+ worth. If you throw a cam in it though, different story:)

It does have a cam in it. (GMPP Hot Cam)

The car has never been 100% right since I bought it (had cam & TB). That is because of the mods and no re-tune. It runs rich (you can smell it), idles high, intermittent SES light etc..

Since I do plan to eventually make more changes i.e. headers, gears and more, I think that purchasing the LT1 Edit will pay for itself over time since I can go in & re-tune any time I want.

The problem is, there is no other way (that I'm aware of anyway) to get the car dialed in and running "right". I know (although it runs hard) that this is not the way it should run ( idle , rich...) and you can't get in their and adjust these things like the old muscle cars. It's all computer, so the LT1 Edit seems to be the way to go.

Pricey...yes....worth it....I hope so.
Like I said, It's not a one time deal. It's an investment that will allow me to "tune" for the life of the car. I wouldn't pay $750 (at least I don't think I would :L ) for a one-time tune, but I would for something like this.

You gotta check out www.lt1edit.com. These guys swear by this thing.

I'm open to all advice or comments though, so bring 'em on. I don't feel like wasting a bunch of cash but this sounds like exactly what I need. After talking w/ a few dyno/tune shops in my area, they all said that w/ the LT1 Edit (and they knew what it was) they could get my car "right", now & w/ future mods. The dyno time is pricey ($100-$150hr) but the one-time $450 for the LT1 Edit is just that...one time.

I somehow missed the hotcam part of your sig:confused Anyway, i take it all back... you will get $750 worth of improvement then. I know LT1 edit is the best, and dialing in your LT4 will really blow you away. you should be near 400 HP @ the crank when you are done:)

Cool...

I just want this baby running @ 100% and if the LT1 Edit is the way to get me there then...

I miss the good old days when you could just pop the hood, adjust the idle, air/fuel mixture and bump the timing then drive her around the block and repeat these simple steps until you got her right. :L

Jeff,

Don't they have programs for your laptop where you can plug it into the diagnostic port while you're driving to get A/F ratios?

What I'm getting at is that I thought someone out there would've already have some pre-installed programs for modifications and certain combinations of modifications.

Like: say you got your hotcam in there with longtubes, open air box and catback exhaust. Could they already have a pre-set program that has taken that combination into account so you don't have to have it dyno'd for $100-150 an hour?

You will be over 400HP but you will need the headers to get there the hot cam loves headers. I highly recomend the lt1 edit tune it only netted me 15HP but it is the icing on the cake. My car ran smoother more responcive. It's the finishing touch on the mods your doing. Oh let the tuner shop doing the tune know that you could let them use your software for a small fee you could get some of your money back.

Edmond,
Yes, you can even send your PCM to a programmer to have it reprogrammed BUT it's really kinda guess-work @ that point. Each car is different and the only way to get your car truly dialed in is to have it dyno-tuned. I'm obviously not the most experienced person when it comes to this but, after talking w/ numerous sources they all say the same thing, for max results it must be done at a shop w/ a dyno. Not to mention, if I send out my PCM for re-tune (which means I'll be w/o my car for 3 weeks) then any mod I do after that will require a re-tune again. With me buying the LT1 Edit, I can re-tune any time I want & it'll only take a couple of hours of dyno time at the most.

Headers...I know, I know!
I'm seriously considering getting the TPIS longtubes BEFORE I do the LT1 Edit.
Decisions Decisions...
Just out of curiosity, what do I do w/ the cats once I install the headers?
I'm not sweatin' the emissions thing cuz in AZ all they do is plug it in & if you are not throwing any codes you're good to go!

Good idea on the tuner use thing BUT I was under the impression that you can only use "your" LT1 Edit for "your" car. Enlighten me pls....

Jeff,

The little pup cats will be gone once you put those headers on.:D

No pups on LT4 :)

If it were me, I would take the cats off and save them. This way if the state has changes, you can put them back in. They are expensive to replace, so don't toss them or punch holes in them. It also helps on resale, in case the car winds up going to a state that has heavy laws.

Would you also recommend removal of the resonator?

Doug Rippie borrowed the software from Myron at TPIS and I know others that have borrowed it. All so your stock cats will not work with long tubes and Corsa you will need to get some bullet cats if tou need to do the emition thing. Get the headers then the tune call some shops that dyno someone in AZ tune should have the soft ware to tune a LT4. Oh Exotic Mussel builds stainless steal headers in the Phoenix area thay are having a group purchase on the other forum I think thay are going for $699.00 and thay are coated danm nice headers. Heard nothing but good about them.

I'm confused....I thought OBDII was '97 and later (LS1). Are LT1 PCMs considered OBDII?

I'm pretty sure that LT1/4/5 PCMs use an EPROM to store engine cal data...which must be removed to reprogram.

I have a lot of experience with the earlier stuff...but not so much with late 90s.

'96 was the start of OBDII

RV6,
Thx for the heads up on Exotic Muscle. They are in Tempe, about 10 miles from me. I'm going to get in touch w/ them & see what they have to offer. I've done a pretty extensive search and nobody in the Phx area has the LT1 edit software needed to tune my car, so buying it is my only option.

Ok. So, the issue Jeff brought up only applies to the '96 LTs?

Bill

Not really Bill,

The ECM / Memcal is basically the same up till '91. The 86(?) - 89 used a 128K chip, the 90 - 91 uses a 256K chip, with the advent of the LT-1 they changed them again. They use a PCM which doesn't have a removeable chip, there are ways of reprogramming in the car for these (but ya gotta have the software/hardware.) The LT1 Edit is one that I've heard a lot about but never really used.

Jeff,

There is another option .... check out www.moates.net they have a all in one device that might be of intrest to you. It's called the Ostrich. They also make a device, the AutoProm, that can write to your PCM. Maybe worth a look.
