Happy Holidays

There is no best, but there are some worst.
Get a real jack , not a stamped steel one.
1 & 1/2 ton jack will be enough.
If your car is lowered you need to check the minimum height of the jack.
Some will suggest using pucks too.
I use frame savers.

Here's what I'm using:

1. Jack stands. I got them from Sam's Club or CostCo for almost nothing....~$20 a pair.
2. 10 feet of 12" wide, 2" thick wood, cut into 3 foot long ramps, plus a strip of scrap wood at the 'tall' end to get extra height. Had the boards cut at Lowe's. 3-4" screws and wood glue to put it all together.
3. Hockey pucks from the local ice rink. I paid 2 bucks a piece, but the hockey girl was cute. :) I only stack them one high, with an eyebolt in the middle. I have 4 modified pucks, and 4 normal pucks.
4. Jack from CostCo - $60.

The jack fits under the side of the car without doing anything special. To lift I insert the eyebolt modified into the slots, or use the regular pucks, it depends on the lifting point. I roll the jack under the car and jack away. Sometimes I use my custom ramps too, but they are nicer just to get under the car without a jack. They fit under the side of the car, and when lifting the rear of the car I place the ramp in front of the rear wheels, and drive forward onto the ramp, using my side mirrors to see if I've gone far enough.

The only valid reason I see to avoid a steel jack is weight. My steel jack is HEAVY, but it is a FLOOR jack with WHEELS...

Norco makes a good floor jack...whatever you get make sure it is a low profile floor jack...so it easily fits under your Corvette.

I could make various disturbing comments on this one...

Jack...

But I will refrain. You want to get a 4 wheeled jack that has a wide pad, preferably with a rubber coating or pad so as to not damage the frame rails. Other than that, you are ready go jack...

ok so who sells agood but not overly priced low profile jack?

Geez, what is good?

1. Lightweight
2. Handles abuse
3. Low lift point....saddle is the right term I think
4. High weight capacity
5. Quick lift to pump ratio
6. High ultimate lift capability
7. Rebuildability
8. Pretty colors...

What the heck is good for you? Damn, I swear I was asking my girl this just lastnight...and knowing more definitely helped get better results.

I got a 3 1/2 ton with stands from Sears on sale. Use it more on the C3 than the C5. I wanted quality more than light weight or cost savings.

I bought the Craftsman aluminum racing jack from Sears. It's pretty easy to handle @ 44lbs, and has a low profile that's nice to have with a Vette. I paid a bit more than I wanted to, but I do think I got a good, quality jack for the money I spent. It cost me $179, on sale from $199.

[Holy cow! As I sat typing this, I noticed an interesting-sounding commercial on TV, and turned to see the spot I had just downloaded-- the new Vette/Chevy commercial!]

Fred
