Gas door lid spring question????

I recently replaced my gas tank in my 74 project car. Inside the old tank I found a curved bracket type piece of metal, which I found out today was the "spring" for the gas lid hinge. Does anyone know how this works?? If I could get it back on that would be good. Right now the door is "flapping in the wind."
