Gas gauge operation

Exactly how does the gas monitoring system work? When mine was reprogramed, the Shop manager tried to explain it in mumbo jumbo. I don't think he knows. The computer is involved somehow. Does it have the old time float? Shell gas and Techron is slowly fixing my problem but I'm just curious why the Vette system is so different.
