Gas Gauge Problems

I have only had the car 3 weeks and use Sunoco 93 and the problem has been getting better, I was told not to top it off when I fill it. So far it only happens when the tank is full and on long trips. I will try techron next time I am at the auto store

ps it is a good idea to reset both trips to "0" at each fill especially if there is more then one driver. anybody remember the old VW's with the reserve lever on the floor :D

Unfortunately, Sunoco is not available in my area. I'll try the Techron and see what happens. On another note, I just received a recall notice on my wife's 2004 vert (something about the wrong steel being used for bolt/washers on lower control arms). I just had the car in to the dealer for an oil change last Friday and nothing was said about this recall.

Yikes! :confused I just experienced the "phantom phuel" gauge problem yesterday en route to Taos, NM, out in the middle of the boonies. When I left home, the tank was 5/8ths full. Just 125 miles later, suddenly the check gauges light came on, and I noticed the DIC said the fuel was low. Sure enough, the analog gauge said zero. Not being in the mood for a long hike through the desert, I switched to the fuel monitoring mode and watched as I tried to optimize the instant MPG readings to minimize the walk, should it come to that.

Fortunately, it didn't - we made it to Taos, and when we filled it up, it only took 12 gallons. BIG relief! :eyerole Well, at least we didn't have to walk. I've been running Chevron, and I guess I'll continue to do so, and keep an eye on the gauge/reset the trip meter, and all that stuff. The car is a 2002, and we've only had it a month. Quite a surprise! And, disappointing that Chevy won't step up to the issue of fixing it for faithful owners. :mad

I took a 5 mile hike across the Mojave desert at 117 degrees one day because of those danged things (and I can't blame CRS - I was only about 19 or so!) :D

2002 your under warrant bring it in. For no just reset the codes it works sometimes. Mines still working great from the brand of gas switch.

Good luck!

Wish I could Andy - it's over the mileage for warranty....I'll work on different brands of gas!

Cheers :beer

Thread revival time!

This just happened to me for the first time. Started my car this AM and reserve fuel popped up, guage read E. I know I had over a 1/4 last night but filled up anyhow and added techron. It only took 11 gallons to fill but the guage only went up to 3/4. I hope the techron works, if not it's the trip odometer for me.

Thanks to the responses I read here, all is now well with my fuel gauge. I switched back to Mobil gas and ran a bottle and a half of Techron and when I filled it again this morning it was actually reading full.

It isn't hard to pull the sending units out of the tanks and clean them yourself. About 1-hour and $0..................................

Fuel guage problems

Andy, appears most of this is resolved and behind you at a high cost. There are several articles floating around from member of Vett clubs as well as one I recall supported by GM where GM acknowledges this fuel reading issue but recommends a simple solution. Shell gas of all things. I can tell you from personal experience with my C5 and from a dozen or more club members that the cleaning agents in Shell will resolve the issue on the sending unit "gook" buildup. Good luck.

Gas guage reflash

have someone/dealer REFLASH your PCM - took care of my problems with gas gauge in my 2001 Z06

I did the reflash. The on line documentation from GM even made reference to the fact that this was a "patch" to fix this problem. Worked for a month. It amazes me how some GM problems are unfixable. I bet if it were Dave Hill's car it would be fixed!

Had the same Problem on my 2000 frc with the fuel gauge going to empty. I now use Shell V-Power 93 Octane ( top tier Fuel) and 1 Bottle of Techron Plus Consentrate fuel system treatment. it covers up to 12 gallons of fuel, I use it every 5-7 fill ups or so using approx 12 gallons of V-power and 1 bottle of Techron. For now Problem solved :cool but if I use Lukeoil Gas or WaWa Gas or some off brand the sympton comes back after several tanks :bash so from now on only Shell V Power & Techron Plus for Me.......:upthumbs Dr C5 Corvette

I just had it happen to me, time for some techron I guess.

Get Some Chevron Techron Plus (Wallmart or Pep Boys) and some Shell V Power 93 oct gas on your first and future fills. I would use 2 bottles of the 12 gallon size and 12-15 gallons of gas. check your Dic codes and reset it also this should bring back your gas gauge until you do the techron thing!!!! :L
you can get that info on the forum as well on pulling codes on your C5 hope this helps:D ............ Dr C5 Corvette

Chevron techron is my next purchase

Now l have to hunt for a Shell Station, l would have to say that local gas stations tend to play with their gas.
One never knows what they are getting.

Does it pay to have my dealer check it out? I still have the GMPP $100 ded or am l just wasting my time.

I just use Chevron Gas!!My car runs better and gets 2-3 MPG better gas mileage on Regular than Premium!!!:boogie:boogie:boogie
No Problems!!:upthumbs

Since I started uing Shell V-Power I haven't had the problem Saturday, on the way back from Carlisle, I was forced to get Exxon (just 5 gallons). It failed the next day, put in Techron, it worked then failed again. Going to the dealer? Why not? Or, the chaplin.

You're right about the$1300. I had it done right after I bought my 'vette in 2003 with about 36K miles on it. I always use Chevron, and periodically I put techron in just for good measure. So far so good. I've heard that some gas has more sulphur in it and that causes a problem with the sending units. I would try a couple of bottles of Techron with a few tanks of gas before I would have the repair done again just to see if it actually fixes the problem...please let us know if this works since right now it seems to be an urban legend with no proof it actually works
