I recently decided to top off my 97. I got in it, drove about a block and the gas gauge needle dropped to "E", the Range on the dic showed 000, and the low fuel light came on. Now I know it was not out of gas because I would have been ****ed if I filled my car with $19.35 worth of air...lol. Anyways, the needle jumped back up past "F", then went down to abut 1/2 tank. I drove to work last night and noticed that it soon falls back to "E", though the tanks is full. The "check gauges" light comes on..lol..as if ya dont noticed the gas needle going to "E"..gotta love the Tech Humor built into the car by Chevy. Anyways, can anyone tell me what might be causing that?

Appreciate any help yall can provide.

My 97 did that after about 2 years. I had to have the sending unit replaced. That was about 30,000 mi. Now at 130,000 it's starting to happen again. Iguess these sending units still need work. (on the 97 at least). I set the trip to 0 at fillup time and get gas between 250 and 300 miles to be sure.

Hi there,
If you search the database, there is a TSB listed for a passenger side fuel tank sensing unit.
Also, there is an updated calibration for the PCM, so that this diagnostic is not so sensitive.

Hello. One thought that comes to mind is the sulpher content of the new gas. I know of other car makes where the sensors in the fuel tank have problems if the sulpher content was too high. The result was that the gas gauge will read 'E' and often bounce between the real gas reading and 'E'. It happened to my Chrysler and eventually went away... The Audi's had a recall on the fuel sensors because of their sensitivity to this problem. My .02 cents.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help, on the bright side, I know I didnt fill the tank with $19.85 worth of vapors..rofl..I can get bad gas from my Mother-in-law without leaving the house, for free even..heheheheh. The bad news is, well hell there is none....

Thanks again for the help. I will change the sending unit and see if thats it, if not I can always say....Sorry bud, I aint got no gas and point to the gage...hehehehehheeh...I Kill Me!

Yall have a good life and remember be cool, lifes too short to be anal, besides ask any lawyer and they'll tell ya preparation-H on a toothbrush is good for the breath, but it taste like hell..ROFLMAO

That was great about the lawyer. From one great state to another.:beer :w :pat

Hey Arcangel 224,
Did you used to write for Drew Carey?.......or Tim Allen?..... or Arsinio Hall?..........

c4c5specialist, what is the FFS fuel system? What is new and improved about it (apart from avoiding the erratic guage readings)? I found out about the AGM battery from you on an earlier post; now there is a FFS fuel system in the 2003s. Please tell.

Hi there,
The FFs system is a complete redesign of the fuel supply system on the c5. This was introduced in the 03 model year, during midproduction.
This is a complete redesign of the system. No parts, tanks, sending units, pumps, lines, or crossover are the same.
It started at 111541 off the assembly line.

c4c5specialist, thank you for the info. It would appear, based on the production start point you posted, that my coupe has the new system. Hopefully, just as with the battery (AGM), problems will go away with the new system.

Paul,
What is the behavior of the new program? I just had my '02 Z06 reprogrammed via the TSB by my local dealership. The needle seems to stay at Full for a while after starting the car before it adjusts to a lower level where the needle should be. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Hi there,
Yes, your Z is acting correctly. Although, you do NOT have the FFS, the recalibration is part of the diagnostic algorithm update.

To c4c5speciallist,
I had a fuel gauge problem with my 2003 Vette (vin2174). Is there a tech bulletin for the '03? I have been using Mobil, Sunoco, and Hess, in no particular order, whichever is availible (closet). The night before (6/6/03) I noticed the "Check Gauge" light on, nothing on the DIC ("range ---") and the fuel gauge at "E". After I filled up the tank (approx. 11 gal to fill up), it took approximately 5 to 10 seconds after I started the car for the fuel gauge to even register any fuel. Is this similar to the previous problems or am I looking at something different?

Hi there,
I would ask that you check for codes in the PCM and post them.
We can assist from there.

Hi c4c5specialist,
The only code o the DIC is P1431H.
According to another web site the literal meaning is Fuel Level Sensor 2 Circuit Performance. My guess (and that is all it is) one of the fuel sensors is "on the fritz". Can you give me more details in English? I can read and interpert prescriptions and lab data (profession: pharmacist), but this stuff is "greek to me".
On the funny side, I was talking to one of my docs. I mentioned I drive a Vette. I also said I am technologically inept. He questioned how I could be technologically inept and drive a Vette. It latter dawned on me how. My Buick key fob has "lock" and "unlock", where by the Vette key fob has pictures.

Actually, it is more like blaming the water in the lake - too soft, which defeats the caulking on the boat.... :o
