My gas guage hits "E" when I still have a quarter tank of gas left. Is this normal ("reserve tank"), or is it a problem? If it is a problem, is it something that might be adjustable at the dash, or is it definitely a bad sending unit in the tank? If it's adjustable, does anyone have a recommended adjustment procedure?

I would suggest you check your ground. I has similar flakey readings until I ran a new ground wire to the gauge cluster! Vettes and grounds = enenies!!

my 76 hits e before empty probably with a bout 5 gal left i think
that about way they all are

Ditto for my '81. 5-6 gal still left when I get the Emergency Low Fuel Light.

Well ain't that odd... that's a bit more of a "reserve" than I'm used to.

I think I will take pws69's advice and add a new ground, next time I have the dash apart, just on general principles. But I'm glad I don't need to do it right now - I have enough other things to work on :)
