Can anyone help with this strange one?

I recently had the steering rag joint replaced. Ever since, whenever I punch the gas only on left or right turns, (or today for the first time) just started slowly rolling into a right turn out of a parking lot, I feel something pushing back on the pedal or my foot. Something heavy like a brick. I looked at the pedal and it seems very simple with a cable and a pivot point. I looked in the area and could not see anything obvious. Plus, when I had the car up on jacks recently to remove and clean the radiator I looked under the car in that area but could not see anything obvious.

I do not really know how the system works but it appears that the cable connected to the pedal goes under a cover, I haven't removed it yet. Would it be possible that I am getting feedback from the cable where it terminates?

Any help would really be appreciated.

You have a cable in a bind or twisted on your ASR!! I'm sure they remove the Control when they changed the rag joint!!:upthumbs

Junk, thanks, I KNEW you'd reply and I appreciate it. Now, without looking at the FSM, what is the ASR and how do I go about fixing it?

Black Box Left front Splash shield between shield and engine almost strait above the intermediate steering shaft,it has 3 cables coming out the back and some wires!! Could even be a bad ground or wiring plug not seated completely!!:upthumbs

Junk, you are amazing! I REALLY appreciate the time you took to post the photos and give me the advice I need. I will take a look at it hopefully tonight. Funny things is, it's intermittent. But I had a feeling what you said is correct. Have you seen this before? I will let you know what I find.

Thanks.

Oh, Probly 1 or 2,If it's intermittent I would be looking electrical,Wire plug or ground!!Sometimes a wheel speed sensor can make them act funny!!I was just going by you just put a rag joint in it and I know it would about be impossible to not remove the ASR unit!! Its a little tight in there!! So thats where I'd start Look'n!!:upthumbs

You bet. That's exactly where I'm going to start looking. It's too coincidental. It only started happening immediately after the rag joint replacement.

Junk, I removed the ASR cover and I could not find anything obvious. They did not remove it because I could see the original rust on the mount bolt and I could not see any new tool marks, plus there were cobwebs which would indicate to me that it wasn't removed. Also, those cables seem fixed in the ASR. I saw where the cable comes from the pedal to the ASR and where it comes from the ASR to the (fuel control?) I was able to move the control easily without any binding and the coiled spring in there looked good. The only thing that I saw that was interesting was some sort of adjustment lever where you would pry down a small piece of plastic and move the cable either front or back. So when I did that, (and I didn't know it would do that), I moved it back to the center position. Then I had to drive my wife to the hospital and now I have to go back. I never had a problem. I haven't had time to look in the FSM for the description and operation of the whole system and the adjustment too.

The two wire plug looked like it was connected well and I could not see any obvious grounds. Any basic info on how it works, what ASR stands for and such would be very appreciated.

I have a 94 LT1, totally stock.

Thanks again Junk.

Junk, I have a question. I looked in chapter 5 this morning and I read that "The accelerator pedal assembly contains a pedal travel stop to prevent overstressing of the adjuster assembly at Wide Open Throttle (WOT)."

Could this be why I get that feeling in the pedal?

Also, it only happens when I gun the throttle in turns. I read also that the wheel speed sensors are in the system. Could it be that the wheel speed sensors will not allow you to punch the throttle in turns so you do not spin out of control because this has never happened on straight accelerations. This is just mere conjecture until I get a chance to look at the wiring diagrams and see what signals do what.

I haven't had much of a chance to troubleshoot because my lovely and gracious wife was in the hospital all weekend. She's okay.

One thing I did see is that on the "early" 1994's (mine was built in July) was that it has a "Throttle body accelerator cable adjustor." Now, I didn't know what this was and I didn't have a chance to read about it first so I lowered the lever and it slid back and forth. I put it in the middle and clamped it down. Did I possibly mess things up? Do I have to do a complete adjustment with the 1/8" drill bit and all that? Your thoughts?

One more thing. I JUST had new tires put on. I have to research the wheel speed sensors because I read in your previous post that a wheel speed sensor can possibly do this. When they replaced the tires could it be possible they messed something up? I really do not think so because I was side by side with the guy who did it at the tire place and he seemed pretty competent.

Another thing to familiarize myself with I guess.

If your not sure don't pry on it!!:beer

I would adjust it by the book because of top post!!(Unless your sure you have it back where it was!) Yes the speed sensors have a say in it,The ASR is to help you maintain control if the car starts spinning or skiding before you realize it,Like on slick pavement or Black ICE!! It simply lets off the throttle quicker than you can!!The car figures it out and reacts!! There usually not that sensitive to do it just punching it in a curve, unless it Lost Traction and there is a speed variance between the wheels!!But if it was a speed sensor totely not working, I'd think the ABS light would be on too!! I've had trouble in the past on C4's with the rear speed sensors getting metal shavings on them and the relucter ring from the rear brakes!!(Rear sensors aren't sealed in the bearing like the front!!)They can be cleaned easily by taking the rear wheel off and removing them,(10MM Bolt) Pull them out of the hole, clean with a paper towel!!(Don't scrape them with a screwdriver!! There Magnetic and it will screw them up!!!!) And then take a air hose and blow through the hole and turn the hub assy to clean the relucter ring all the way around!!(Don't be under the car when you do this it will blow Crap all over you!!!):L:L:L If 1 or both are mis-counting speed it could make the ASR act this way!!:upthumbs

PS I don't think the tire shop did anything wrong, other than shake in a little more brake dust!!

Great, thanks for your help Junk! I will do just as you recommended.
