Is a replacement gas tank available for the '81? Also need the rubber gasket around the inlet, and the foam stip that goes along the top of the tank, and the strip that goes between the frame and the tank...not sure what this stip is made of....it's thin and not foam...but something else.

When I pulled the sender out of the tank, I had to fold the strainer sock to clear the tank opening.....the sock crumbled in my hand. Guess it was time to replace it huh???

Anyone use the gas tank sealing stuff from Eastwood Company? Does it work? I do not have any leaks, but do not want to ever drop this tank again.

Yes I found the build sheet...but the wind tore it into pieces when the tank was sitting outside....bumed.....got most of the pieces...but not all of them....really bumed....

Thanks,
Lanny

Lanny,

I had my fuel tank dropped also, and I recall the foam strip. At the time I did a minor search, and I could not find it; however, Paragon used to be Corvette Stop in Cali, and they have found stuff for me before. You might want to try them out.

I did not have to use a tank sealer; however, I remember using a kit that included the sulfuric-like acid for the etching of the metal, and the coating. I used it on a Yamaha 125 old motorcylce I was fixing for my kid, and doing that on such a small tank was a bit of labor (one has to turn the tank every which way to ensure the coating spreads everywhere). Not being able to look inside the tank makes it difficult to see if the coating is thorough. Anyway, there are POR-15, the Eastwood sealer item# 10165 Z snd others but it is very similar to what I used. The sealing part, if more liquid than paint, should work fine. The stuff I used was more like polyurathane paint (thick stuff).

Here in NM there are shops who can clean and seal the tank. I am sure there are some there in AZ. However, I understand that you possibly would like to tackle it yourself, and there is nothing wrong with that.

My build sheet was bad also, and I am only missing the left lower corner. I took pictures just in case.

I guess that this project means you won't
make it to the Cruise-Fest, right? :(

:duh I forgot to tell you the name brand of what I used...it was Kreem tank sealer and kit. Like I said, this is more popular with motorcycle circles.

I dropped my tank a month ago to replace the rubber fuel lines on the top of the tank. The inside of 1981 gas tanks have a green 3/16 inch thick hard liner, so using a gas tank sealer that's engineered for metal tanks would be a waste fo time. I pulled the gas filler neck which is connected to the sending unit. I was able to inspect every inch of the inside of the tank. Even if the sides and bottom of the tank were rusted away, I don't think it would ever leak. As far as the gas tank filler neck/sending unit gasket, Ecklers has them in stock pn 22966. I know, I live in the same town as Ecklers. Their number is 800-327-4868. Website www.ecklers.com I hope this is in time to help. Dwayne

Save yourself some time and headache, there are usually gas tanks on ebay for about 150.Ive bought about 4 or 5 over the years for customer cars. The rub strips can be found in almost any corvette catalog.
