So changing gear ratios is a matter of changing out the ring and pinion?

So changing gear ratios is a matter of changing out the ring and pinion?

Pretty much, yeah. That's where you get the ratio from, the number of teeth on the ring gear : number of teeth on the pinion gear. So hypothetically speaking if you had 41 teeth on a ring gear and 10 teeth on the pinion, it would be 41:10, which simplifies to 4.10:1.

Very quick and dirty overview:

The pinion is spun by the drive shaft, and it meshes with the ring, which is bolted (using a differential to allow the wheels to spin at different rates during turns) to the axle. Two critical areas to pay attention to are the pattern the teeth make where the gears fit together, and the amount of free play between them.

It's also best practice to replace all seals, bearings, and crush sleeves while everything's apart because they will wear differently with the new setup.

Check out www.richmondgear.com for a better explanation and I believe you can even print instructions for installation there, along with a list of tools and parts you'd need.
