The fella that wrote the Haynes manual must have been having a bad day when he described where the grease fittings are on the suspension.

"You will find three somewhere around each front wheel". In other words, look for them youself ya dumb cluck!

"And you will find one more near each rear tie rod end". Gee....I wonder just "how near" that might be?

On my '96, I find only two in front, for the upper and lower ball joints. (Oddly, there are no fittings on the outer tie-rod ends). I find no grease fittings on the rear suspension anywhere.

Could someone please be a little more specific and direct this "dumb cluck" as to where I may find three on each front wheel and one on each back wheel, so I can go tell Jiffy Lube to buzz off? Thanks

Hey cluck????? I THINK, on your 96 there are only 4 g.fittings. Just the ball joints!!!!!! AND remember, I SAID, I THINK!!!!!!;LOL

The total number of fittings will depend on whether they're original or replacements, such as the u-joints. The factory joints were drilled for Zerk fittings but a lot of people, especially if they know they're going to be hard on the drivetrain, will install u-joints without a grease fitting. Other parts of the suspension will differ with the installation of aftermarket stuff too.

Basically though, your main concern will be your ball joint grease fittings, of which there should be four. ;)

That's one reason that the generic Haynes and Chilton's manuals are not worth much more than very basic reference. The factory shop manuals sold by Helm, Inc. are the ones to have. They are year specific and worth the money. Go to www.helminc.com and find the manual for your year car. You can also fin them on eBay if used versions will work.

Not all year's C4's had the same number of Zerk fittings. My 87 has fittings on the rear outer tie rod ends but my 92 does not. At some point GM changed to a permanently greased end at the rear. The later C4's also used permanently greased front tie rod ends. So that would give some C4's 6 Zerk fittings on the front but some will have only 4.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the info.

And you're so right on the manual business, too. If I am going to be the chief mechanic on this Corvette, I had better get a shop manual that at least addresses the vehicle I have.

NOW, if nothing else happens, it is ready for the trip to Auburn.

If only we can get the weather to cooperate.......
