(engine in question is an 89 L98 TPI, 700r4
I see more controversy whenever I read threads about rocker arm replacement. I am planning to do valve seals very soon, and as long as I'm "in there".....
I've done quite a bit of researching on different rocker arm brands and types. After actually reading a book (by David Vizard) devoted to the subject of comparing rocker brands/types on GM L98 in particular, I've decided to use Clevite Performer stamped rockers and use a 1.6/1.5 mix.
If I understand this stuff correctly (help me out mechanics) a roller tip rocker would provide me with a less "frictional" contact....but if I go by what Vizard says in his book, a roller tip isn't going to matter on a low rpm street motor anyhow. I've also heard some horror stories about problems with the roller tips gouging. If I wouldn't have noticeable improvement from a roller rocker I assume going with a certified ratio stamped rocker would be a more reliable way to go (durability-wise).
NOW.... assuming I go with the Clevite stamped I have some questions. Can anybody tell me anything about grooved versus standard balls? Do the grooved ones "really" oil any better than the standard? I've heard some opinions that grooved actually run HOTTER because of less surface area? Also...do I really need to change the nuts? I understand the concept of mating ball to rocker, but the nut just holds it down...doesn't it?
Opinions are wanted!! But most likely I'll do stamped rockers/grooved balls the stock nuts unless I'm convinced the grooved ball and new nuts are necessary.
THANKS!!
