I had the bad luck of getting my 84 keyed by some punk kid,I caught him but I know him or his parents do not have the money to fix my paint. Now its not that deep, before I get too out of hand with this can medium scratches or most of it be buffed out with one of those buffers at the local auto supply?Does anyone have advice for me here?

First, why did he key the car? second, go to the cop's and put in a complaint. Why should you have to pay for the damage:mad

If it's not deep, it will buff out. I had an 80lbs bullmastiff try to climb on my hood.

I used an orbital buffer. First with some 3M Rubbing Compound, then finished with some 3M Final Glaze. Made the paint look brand new with a mirror finish. So I did the whole car. My paint has never looked this shiny. I'll never wax a car by hand again.

it all depends on how deep the scratch went. i had some scatches on my old z28. they wouldnt buff out so i used some 1500 grit sand paper and wet sanded and then buffed it out, it came out looking like new paint. i'd have to agree that you should at least tell the parents of this kid so he can be held responsible for his actions.

several years back i had 4 tires cut on my car. the kids were caught and ordered to pay for damages. in all they cut about 40 tires that night. quite a hefty bill. the parents were held responsible and i was paid in full. the parents had no money but the court "loaned" them the money to pay everyone back, then collected the repayment. i dont know if thats a common program, but it may be worth looking into. i bet the parents didnt mess around with paying the money back toi the court system...

Yah I agree with poster. Def report it to the Cops. Ppl who do damage to harmless things, will next be killing/harming small animals, then grow to setting flres, etc. "The time to kill a tiger is while it's still a cub".
Do you want that kid to attack you 5 years form now. Do you want ME to have to shoot him if he attacks me or my property. I WILL DO THAT.
Tough Love now, may keep him and you, alive later.

Their numbers are Legions....................

Yah there seems to be a an unlimited supply of evildoers.
Fortunately there's also a good supply of Hollow Points, too.
Improving civilian marksmanship is my goal.

Tonylong, Read your profile, besides being a Pa. lad, your a Libra too, still chuckling after your Bio., Iv'e been into rental property for 30 yrs., always carry a 9MM these days, the "Dumbing Down of America" is upon us and the " Didley Boppers" don't care. The laws protect the guilty, not the innocent...............

MAACO, probably time for new paint anyway.

First report it to the police.
The parents should be made to pay.
If that fails check with your insurance company they may take care of it.
If you can not catch your finger nail in the scratch then their is a good chance that it can be wet sanded and buffed out. If you go through the clear then you will need to repaint the entire panel to make it look right you can not blend clear without seeing the spot.

What a bummer. I saw a candy red Nova, a really sharp car, at a local chevy show and shine. A few weeks later he was at another show and I saw where his paint had been keyed from front to back. Made me sick seeing it. No buffing that one out.
Anyway, take the advice of others and at least make his parents know of his evil deed. The little scumbag needs to learn a lesson or he'll just keep getting worse.
Next check with Meguires.com They have some really good car detailing advice and tutorials on color sanding, buffing, etc. Whether you use their products or not, the info is good stuff.

The above advice is right on. Also, report it to the police and get a report. File a claim with your insurance co. They should cover it under comprehensive. If so, then you can try to get your deductible paid for by the parents. That would be alot easier then trying to get them to pay for the whole job if they're not that well off. I feel your pain- been there a half a dozen times.

I totally agree with you, we just passed a law in Texas, goes into effect Monday. You can shoot if someone is damaging your car!
