My 86 is hard to start every morning if you hit the key &let it turn over 5 or6 times try again and again it will eventually fire .have installed new fuel pump which comes up to the right pressure also cleaned the tps can any one help

May be some dumb ideas, but how about cold start injector, open EGR can cause excessive lean start mix, cylinder compression, are the plugs getting fouled?

is there any way of checking the cold start injector? the timing is ok & plugs arent fouled

I'm sure there is, but it would probably involve removing the injector from the engine (with the fuel line still attached) and having a helper turn the key on, and dispensing fuel from the injector into a jar. Obvious fire hazard. Might check with the library for Hanes manual to see if a procedure is inside. Check electrical connections first though.

I think you can check the resistence of the injector, I'll have to do some checking I think I have the info here somewhere.

Guys,
I haven't found it yet but I'm still looking.

Don't know your fuel configuration but it sounds like a TBI.
I had a Jimmy with a TBI which would seem to crank 'forever' before starting. Someone told me that the cold start injector was 'lean' by design and the problem could be over-come by cranking for a second (or less), turning the key to 'off' then cranking again for 1 or 2 seconds. Started like a dream. Used the technique for the next 180,000 miles.

I found my 85 was hard to start cold until I read the Owners Manual. It says don't touch the throttle, just hit the key. Starts like a charm!!!

(if all else fails, read the instructions)

This is just a shot in the dark, but it is possible that it could be something as simple as a fuel filter (some have check valves to prevent backflow)? I know you said you have a new fuel pump, but it could still take a few seconds to get fuel to a injectors. Just a thought??

Good luck,
Dennis

How many miles on your injectors? My '88 when I first bought it would do almost the same thing. I bought a used (refurbed) set of injectors, installed them and the problem was solved. I believe the old injectors were leaking down.

Hook up a fuel pressure guage, turn your key on, check the pressure, turn the key off and wait. If it droppes more than a couple pounds in 3 minutes your injectors are leaking down.
