Hi all. My 1984 right side headlight always goes up like a champ but will not always gome down unless I start to turn the manual knob on the bottom of the motor and then it unsticks and runs closed. Bought some new internal gears for it and spent the afternoon changing them and still have the same problem. When I had the motor open everything seemed to be OK, the old gears were not very worn. Any thoughts? Is there some type of limit switch that is stuck and maybe keeping some relay de-energized? Thanks in advance. Mike

Most likely a burnt spot on the motor commutator from stopping and starting in the same position. That's why it starts when you move the motor shaft a liitle off the spot.

Thanks Pete. That makes sense. I cleaned the commutator really well with Isopropyl alcohol before I put it back together and didn't see any obvious burned or arcing spots but who can tell sometimes. The brushes looked good. I went out and tried it this morning and it worked fine but it always sems to mess up when you pull up someplace and there are people around! I guess I'll go price a new motor. Mike

A good way to clean them up is with a fine abrasive cloth like 00 grit, or crocus cloth. After you degrease them, check in between the comm. conductors for shorts and run an xacto-knife between them to scrape out any oxidation. After you're done they should be shiny and copper colored. Since you have already done it one, you know your way around now. It shouldn't be too long to double check it.
