For the first time in months, I turned on the headlights and the right side flipped properly, however , the left only flipped half way open. I can’t see anything wrong, both motors seem to run . Now, it’s working . I’m sure it will happen again. Did the 88’s have problems, I know the 84- 87 had some problem with the plastic drive gear.

Sounds like the nylon bushings are going. Do a search here on the web site. lots of info on this subject.

Yes, it's most likely the bushings. They're roughly $5 per side, and you might as well do both sides. They're available at MAD, Eckler's, and even on Ebay. Here's a tip: go s-l-o-w when you're taking apart the headlight motor housing, to make sure you get all the little washers back on correctly. When you open up the little gear box, you'll probably find the original bushings ground into dust.

Bushings

Does anyone have an exploded view of headlight motors and related that shows bushing location ?

no pic, but if you look at the motor, they are in the bottom round area. the top cylinder part is the motor, the bottom circular area is where the bushings are housed.

I'll lay odds its your bushings. Go to Home Depot and ask for item number 595609. You will need six of these nylon spacers to repair both headlights. They cost me .69 cents (plus tax) for a pack of three at my local Home Depot store.

Much cheaper than the $7.99 price in MAD, Eckler's and some of the other specialty catalogs and they are the exact same Delrin spacers. Go figure.

If there's a TechTips portal on this Forum search under "headlight bushings." If not, let me know and I'll see if I can get you a copy of the instructions I used when I replaced mine a couple of months ago.
