In having the issue of replacing the headlight switch shaft after plastic knob and retainer was broke, i finally bought the headlight shaft with pre-installed knob and installed it. I had to pull the instrument panel because it went dead. but even after i took that out I still couldn't get access to the SW from there. So after determining i needed to remove the dash pad to gain access to it, which was easier than i had originally thought!
After that is out of the way, removed the nut from front of SW, pulled the wire connector off and finally saw how to remove the shaft from the SW assembly. there is a little spring loaded button on one side, depress that and wiggle headlight shaft until it releases. When you go to reinstall shaft, i found it best after i partailly installed the instrument bezel, inserted shaft through that after SW was remounted and latched the shaft into the SW. a couple pics of what it looks like! Hope this helps someone in the future!
