Hei Distributor

I've got an 84 crossfire with 154K miles and still running strong. I am on borrowed time with the original distributor. Question, Can the distributor be rebuilt? Is it something that I can do (backyard Mech)? or do I have to have six special tools and a proffessional rebuild it? Are the distributors advertised in Eklers, MidAmerica for $349 any good? :)
I'm not in a hurry for one, it's still working but could quit at any time. I would like to take a Northern trip come fall and would like the piece of mind that the distributor is good. :Steer

Thanks,
Bob w/jet4rs

Check your local Advanced Auto or Napa they have remanufactured HEI"S reasonable priced

If its not broke...don't fix it...I have 168 K on my 84 ,distributor is still good...just change the module inside (if you like) and you should be good to go. What makes you think its going bad?

new does not mean better have taken many electronic parts out of factory fresh boxes at work that were bad if the old unit is working and the bushings are ok keep on trucking it is a proven part with all the bugs worked out only my 2 cents worth Steve:D :w :beer ;shrug

JonM and Steve,
I agree as to the not broke no fix rule but, about 4 years ago the module went T's Up. While changing the module, all of the insulators that seperate the wires inside fell apart (dried out). I did a quick fix at that time with RTV. I am afraid to open it up to see how it is surviving. The jet is no longer my daily driver and I don't depend on her, but I would like to take the fall trip knowing that it will survive for a long period of operation. Bearings? I have no clue. Is there a way to check?

if you take the cap off you can try to wiggle the shaft in the dist it should have no play to speak of side to side some up and down is ok
. the repair you did was probably fine i have seen those plug ends fall apart the main thing is that the terminals get hooked up correctly and the connectors fit tight . as log as everything is not green and nasty its probably ok steve :w
