It has been raining for almost a week straight and today the sun came out for a while so I decided to take my corvette for a drive. Ever since my carport collapsed Ive kept it under a cloth cover, then a tarp, when the weather was poor. So it has been under the tarp since friday, and today being wensday. When I pull the cover and tarp off there is a giant blotch on my hood! Further investigation reveals that the clearcoat is completely gone in this spot, down to the paint, you can even feel and see the bear fiberglass!!!! What would cause this? Simple moisture?? Ive left it under the tarp for much longer during the long winter months and nothing like this has happened before.. I cannot afford a new paintjob, so what can I do to reseal it? I have "clearcoat sealer" that I got in a paint touch up kit, is this good enough? What products are recomended? Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated since my car now has a giant poka-dot on the hood cowl.

Sounds to me like some kind of solvent came into contact with your hood! Was the tarp contaminated with something? Was something spilled onto the hood and not cleaned before being stored?

-Tatortot,

I moved this down into the Care & Detailing forum in hopes you find some fast help.

I would at least get some wax or polish on it to protect what is left.. But I'm NOT by any means very knowledgable with paint and esp the clear coat type.

Good luck my young friend ..

bbw-

When I put it away for the past week nothing was done differently to the tarp/cover or car itself. The only thing that I could think of was I washed the cover in a normal washing machine in early winter.. But I have stored the car for longer periods of time since then, always put away dry and always in the same way since then.. thanks for the reply.

Bud-

I appreciate you moving it and the advice.. I have to do something to it before it starts raining again tonight.. I appreciate such a quick response... thanks again.

i'm no where close to an expert but it could have been acid rain. i'm just shooting for a possible solution here. check weather history or future and see how acidic or basic your rain is.

corvettecrazy,

The thought of that also occured to me... of all the places though, why the hood, thats the worst...ugh so frustrating I work so hard on it and it just gets worse... either way what happened is in the past.. this weekend I'm going out and buying another, more sturdy, car port, and I'm going to try and see what I can do about the current glossless blotch.. thanks for the replies.

Another thought about how or why...

By chance did you put the ole girl away hot? Then did it rain? I don't remember (I guess I could look it up) if your car is a St. Louis or Bowling Green 81.. If it is St. Louis and has not been repainted it would still be Laq. paint.

I KNOW from experience that the laq paint will turn a milky color under a bra if it gets wet then is baked by the sun,...and is a real pita to get out!

Hang in -Tator someone will be along that can provide you with some help..

Bud,

It is a St. Louis car but it has been touched up somewhere along the years... yes I did put it away hot and it started raining soon after, then didnt stop for several days. Also occured to me.. but Ive put it away hot before.. regardless that must have been it.. combination of heat, moisture and time. This is definatly the top or clear coat gone though, you can see the fiberglass specs in it, and feels very rough too.. I put a little of the clearcoat touchup stuff I have on a small portion just to test it.. good so far but Ill wait till tomarrow to see how it turns out... thanks for thinking about my situation Bud.

I am wondering exactly where on the hood the problem is, and how long have you had the car. The reason I ask is sometimes if the AC Compressor had ever malfuntioned in the past, and oil from that compressor sprayed the hood. If so after time it could bleed through the fiberglass and bubble the hood.

JohnM,

It is where the very begining of the hood cowl starts, right above the point and slightly to the right, and it goes to almost a quarter ways up the hood. I do not believe it is the compressor, I popped the hood and the underside was completely dry.. though it was myserious that things like my master cylinder cap had condinsation on it... and Ive had the car 3 years and 7 months, first year exposed to the elements, the rest not. Thanks for your reply.
