UPDATE

I have stared at the diagrams of the steering column assembly for so long, when I close my eyes that is all I see.

Anyways... I started the disassembly from step 1 and it looks like Im missing a few pieces. When I pull the steering wheel & hub off, there is supposed to be a rod sticking out of the steering column. That is what I am missing. Who would steal this rod? I found a few misc. steering column parts on the floor... but I know I am missing at least this rod. Instead of the rod there seems to be a hole that drops into the column several inches. Can I just replace what I am missing or should I get another column?

I thought I saw the "ROD" in one of your PIX's

The next thing is to locate the KEY...

When I get home tonight I'll take a pix & look in the shop manual!

On the top of the SHAFT

( The center bit hanging out of your steering wheel)
There should be a groove at the back of the shaft where an ODD shaped key
fits into the tail. This SHOULD have fallen out.. and is sitting at the bottom of what's left of your steering column.. take a flashlight out and LOOK.

If it is down there get a small magnet, or a grabber and fish it out!

Now, there is a screw type device on the front side of the column ( that is still attached to the wheel, there are 2 small screws locking this to the adjuster.. remove these 2 screws.. and back the BIG phillips screw OUT..

Ok.. now the trickey part
Put the KEY in the back of the front shaft.. use some thick grease to hold it into position. Put the rod into the FRONT side of the shaft ( where you backed the BIG phillips screw out).. Look at the remainder of the column ( still bolted to your dash) there will be a SLOT in that shaft where you line up the KEY to that SLOT... slide it in.

Now take the BLACK PHILLIPS screw.. and tighten it DOWN.. this pushes on the rod.. which wedges the KEY..into the column.. LOCKING the two!

Now Line up the adjuster to the BIG PHILLIPS and put the 2 small screws back in.. this allows you to loosen the BIG PHILLIPS just enough to SLIDE the column in & out ( for the telescopic function ).

I'll still take pictures when I get home.

Oh yeah.. Looks like your missing

The BIG spring which:

1) Connect's the horn button to the column.. so no horn for you till you get another spring ( but you can still drive the car)

But it's an easy part to snag.....

Great!!! Thank you.

Do you think I should be able to get the individual parts that I need or should I get another column?

Heah LEEJANDZ!
Did you get your column figured out yet??If your still having problems I can email you some pics of what it should look like with the steering wheel off.I think the pin your talking about is actually inside the shaft and once you take out the star lock bolt it will be there. Its down in the shaft so you might not be able to see it as its down in there abit. When you turn your steering lock ring it pushes that pin down in the column and that locks your tele/tilt to the position you want.
I have a column that I took out of my 80 that I could sell ya if you want.I had another column on hand and the 1 in it I have in a closet right now so can take pics easily for ya!The turn signal switch is alittle worn but works fine.Just doesn't stay in turn position when you turn the wheel with it on!I got another switch but would have to take column apart to replace and was easier to just replace the column.
If you look in Covette Central catelog they have a pretty good pic of the major pieces of the column that you need and what postion they need to be put in it.
Let me know!

There is also a what is called a locking wedge bumber. It is a very small round piece about a 1/4 long that fits between the lock rod and the locking wedge. if you do not have it in there the tele will not lock. The lock rod slides down and forces the locking wedge out. It has to have that small wedge bumber to work. Sorry but it is confusing thing to try to explain.

Steering column Upper shaft

I think you can EASILY get the parts needed.

ALL GM's that have TELESCOPIC have the same bits.

Parts 40,41,42

Are what I'm showing you.. and the shaft(41) is still bolted to you wheel!

42& 43 are what I call the key
44 is the shaft in your column in your dash
40 is the rod
the STAR screw is not shown but would chase after the rod.. the nose of the shaft is internally threaded.

Get it NOW?

VIGMAN

I am going to owe you lunch or whatever.

(RE: shaft1.jpg) I am missing the item called "shaft on your wheel"

I have the key and the rod.
What scares me now is I am probably missing other parts.

Where can I get a replacement "shaft on your wheel"
(RE: column1.jpg) Is this part 41 on the diagram? the "upper shaft"

vigman -- Are what I'm showing you.. and the shaft(41) is still bolted to you wheel!

It is still bolted to the wheel.
I understand how where the key fits into the upper shaft.

Now how do I get that into the column?

On the diagram, the upper shaft #41 slides into the bearing housing support #49? Right?

I am about 2 miles from CORVETTE MIKE'S in ANAHEIM CA if you wanted to stop by... :)

The key is #42 & #43?
Bumper & wedge. Or am I missing something.

(RE: shaft2.jpg & shaft3.jpg)
Does the key fit into the upper shaft with the rounded edge in or out? (My guess is in...)
Does the tip of the key point towards or away from the driver. (My guess is away...)

I hope that makes sense

I have part 41 if you need it.

Im not sure I need the entire column now, just a few misc. pieces.
But if it turns out that I do need it... How much $ w/ S&H to 92865?

chuck -- I have part 41 if you need it.

Thank you I appreciate that, but I have it.
It was still attached to the wheel, so I didnt know what it was.

:m

The ONLY part I can see that you are missing

Id the BIG spiral spring that attaches from the back of the LARGE HUB ( where the wheel screws down to) ( not shown in diagram)

And makes the connection to the copper ring in the other half of the column.

THIS IS NOT A STRUCTURAL PART

All it does is
1) act as a piece of wire to get the horn connection down the column.

2) When you have the wheel pushed in.. and want to adjust it out.. it will assist you moving the wheel out.

So for re assy of your parts..

1) Remove sub shaft from wheel.

2) Install key in tail of sub shaft ( put some grease to hold the key in position). Slide the sub shaft into the main shaft.

3)Slide the rod in ( and any bushings needed on the outside of the sub shaft).

4) Put the wheel & the nut for the wheel on.

5) Put the big phillips that locks the rod into position.. tighten that big phillips ( JUST ENOUGH) so the rod pushes on the key and locks the sub shaft.remember this pushes on the key

6) assemble other bits as needed.

Vig~

I have some other column parts if you need anything let me know.
