vigman -- Any progress?

I took the day off from the VETTE and I just got home from work...
so I will give it another go when I wake up.

What puzzles me is how did this all come apart in the first place.
Dont you need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off.

What if I put it all together and it happens again while Im driving???

Yikes!!!

;help ;help ;help

If it's done PROPERLY

It wont....

Just always make SURE the wheel is LOCKED.

The adjustment screw was PROBABLY set
incorrectly.

:) :) :)

WOO HOO!!!
I was able to get the steering wheel back on.
But it is super sloppy.
The star screw wont screw in all the way and it sticks out.
But at least I can steer the wheels again.

I have 3 extra parts that you can see in the attachment.

I think they are horn parts but Im not sure.

:( :( :(

the attachment didnt show up in the last post
the file is too big.
I will email it to you.

When you say sloppy..

Do you mean the coupling between the sub shaft & the main shaft is slipping.. or the steering is not responsive?.. or you turn the wheel & it takes a second for the wheels to react ( sloppy steering box & linkage?)

UPDATE

;help ;help ;help

Mike

So I got the steering wheel puller and compressor... I just borrowed them from my local autozone.
Anyways... the wheel puller bolts were tweaked...
I went back and pick up another set and the same thing happened.
So I just took the wheel to my buddys body shop and had them pull it.
Then I had one of the "big" neighborhood kids push down the sping to get all the parts in place.
Needless to say I didnt need either tool.

Now comes the strange part.
The towards/away movement is gone... but the slop from side/side
is still there... and Ive discovered its not only side to side but a complete 360* motion.
So I guess I should replace that race bearing.
Ill deal with that when I get the turn lever and have to take it all apart... unless you think I should do it now.

;help ;help ;help

Jason

replace that bearing and all shall be well.

I looked at the "Spacers" that you have on your wheels... what kinda rims do you have?

I'll bet the "spacers" keep the rims from hitting the brake calipers.

In the back I have the aluminum wheels 15 x 8.5.
The weird thing is I took off the spacer and mounted the wheel and it will clear the caliper.
But whoever owned or worked on this car before me was a complete idiot.
It is so sad what they did to the car.
You should see the fuse box

:( :( :(

So when are you comming down my way?

Assembly problem.

I know that this thread is a alittle old 'but a have a simulair problem. I tore my telescoping column apart and now I can not figure out how the upper shaft is held to the yoke. I have the rod and the funny shaped key (normally a half moon shape). I read the previous instuctions but I could not get some of the previous pictures to show up. I have Three repair manuals and a assembly manual but still can not figure this out. This is the only thing holding me up from getting my vette back legally on the road. Thanks,

I have a 79 Gm Shop man. that show's the column Apart and how to rebiuld!! Where are you at in NC?:upthumbs junk!!

I'm stationed at Cherry Point (Havelock). I did not realize that the shaft was loose until I tried to use the puller to reinstall the steering lock gear. ( I suppose this is normal when you are half a sleep and trying to accomplish the task) From what I gatherd from this thread the "key " goes in a certain way and the rod some how locks the uppershaft with pressure ? All the manuals I have now, do not show this or any other way that the shaft is locked in. Thanks agian,
Chiller

gmjunkie,
Thanks again for the response. This afternoon I figured it out and it seems to be good. I used a allen head bolt to lock the steering while I used the puller (over it) to install the clip. Thanks again,
Chiller
